Just hours before the horror that stunned Shreveport, there was one last public clue, and it did not look ominous at all. It looked ordinary, upbeat, even sweet, which is exactly why it hits so hard now.

In what now feels like the story's most chilling detail, Shamar Elkins' final visible social media update showed him sharing a lighthearted moment with his oldest daughter. There was no warning in the tone, no public hint of the devastation police say would soon follow.

A Post That Looked like Any Other

In that Facebook post, Shamar wrote, "Lol!!!! Took my oldest on a lil 1 on 1 date had to catch her down bad ugh ugh........." The caption, paired with a photo of a young girl eating in the car, now lands with devastating irony.

That contrast is the part most difficult to shake: A casual family post one moment, then a citywide nightmare the next.

What Happened Hours Later Left a City Reeling

According to KSLA News 12, police say Elkins was responsible for a domestic violence incident in Shreveport on Sunday morning, April 19, 2026, that left eight children dead and two women injured. Authorities said seven of the children were his, while one was not.

The victims were identified by their mothers, the coroner's office said, as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. Their ages ranged from just three to 11 years old.

Police said the violence began on Harrison Street, where Shamar's wife was reportedly shot. Investigators then said he went to a second home on West 79th Street near Linwood, where another woman and the children were shot.

The details only become more heartbreaking from there. Police said a 13-year-old boy managed to escape by jumping from the roof and, while he suffered broken bones, is expected to survive physically.

Two women also survived the shooting, though both were gravely wounded. Police said Shamar's wife was shot in the face, underwent surgery, and is expected to survive, while the other woman's condition was described as very serious.

Then came the frantic final stretch across multiple locations. Police said the case extended over four scenes: two homes, a carjacking scene where Shamar allegedly stole a vehicle, and the Bossier City location where the pursuit ended.

After a chase from Shreveport into Bossier City, police said Shamar was fatally shot in the 400 block of Brompton Lane. Authorities said gunfire was exchanged, and investigators are still working to determine whether he died from police gunfire or from a self-inflicted wound.

Even for seasoned officers, the scale of the case appeared overwhelming. As KSLA reported, Shreveport police described it as an extensive scene, unlike anything many responders had ever seen, while Louisiana State Police took over the investigation into Shamar's death.

But the unsettling picture does not end there. Another detail that deepens the mystery of who Shamar was before the tragedy is his military background — a fact that adds another layer of shock to a case already almost impossible to process.

Background Details That Raise Even More Questions

Per NBC News, Shamar served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020. He worked as a signal support system specialist and a fire support specialist, though the Army said he never deployed and left as a private.

That same report also noted Shamar had a 2019 arrest and conviction for illegal use of a firearm, something police said likely prohibited him from legally owning firearms.

Then there is the family’s recent move, another piece that makes the tragedy feel even more surreal. Neighbors told NBC News the family had moved into the home only about six months ago. More details on the story will follow shortly.
