Zaire Wade's name was trending over the weekend — and not for anything happening on a basketball court. The 24-year-old son of NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade became the subject of a law-enforcement report out of Burbank, California, that quickly rippled across sports and entertainment media.

Details of what happened inside a Burbank home in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, are now drawing attention to a young athlete who has spent the last few years trying to carve out his own path in professional basketball.

What Police Say Happened in Burbank

According to law enforcement sources cited by NBC4 Investigates, Burbank police were called to a home around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday after a 911 caller reported hearing a woman screaming.

When officers arrived, they found Zaire Wade and a woman who had lacerations on her face and body, sources told the outlet. Paramedics responded to the scene, but the woman was not taken to a hospital.

After investigating, officers placed Zaire under arrest. He was booked on three counts: felony domestic violence, criminal threats, and false imprisonment, per the same reporting.

An emergency protective order was issued for the woman at the scene.

The Charges and the $50,000 Bond

The Burbank Police Department took Zaire into custody on Sunday, June 21, and he was charged with a felony, according to arrest records reviewed by People.

He was released later the same day after posting a $50,000 bond.

The case is expected to be forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, which will decide whether to file formal charges.

As of the initial reports, no statement had been issued by Zaire, his representatives, or his famous father.

The Handgun Found at the Scene

One detail in the police account has drawn particular attention. According to law enforcement sources, a handgun was taken from the house after the arrest.

The weapon was removed from the residence following the booking, and an emergency protective order was put in place for the woman.

Authorities have not publicly described who owned the gun, whether it was loaded, or what role — if any — it played in the alleged altercation that brought police to the home in the first place.

What's known so far is limited to what sources have told reporters: a 911 call about a woman screaming, visible injuries on her face and body when officers arrived, three booking charges, and a firearm logged into evidence.

The rest, for now, sits with the LA County District Attorney's Office.

The Wade Family Athlete Trying to Make His Name

Zaire Wade is the oldest of Dwyane Wade's children, and for years, his basketball career has been observed under the spotlight that comes with his last name.

He played high school basketball at Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, California, where his teammates included Bronny James, Ziaire Williams, and BJ Boston Jr. His senior season was hampered by an ankle injury, and in April 2020 he announced a transfer to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire for a postgraduate year, a move that allowed him to reclassify into the 2021 recruiting class.

The reclassification was designed to give him more time to develop. Dwyane publicly supported the decision.

From there, Zaire entered the professional ranks. He was selected 10th overall by the Salt Lake City Stars in the 2021 G-League draft. He played 12 games for the team, averaging 1.8 points and 2.5 rebounds, before being waived.

Dwyane Wade's Warning to His Son

Back in 2020, during an appearance on the All the Smoke podcast, Dwyane spoke openly about the pressure on Zaire and offered a piece of advice that has been quoted often since.

"I told my son, it don't matter what your name is," Dwyane said. "They're not gonna just fill up the arena to watch you play, you know? They're gonna come see you, one time. But if you ain't doing nothing, they ain't coming back."

The 6'2" guard shot 26% from the field and 17% from three in his brief G-League stint.

After being waived, Zaire took his game overseas. In April 2024, his agency announced that he had signed with the Macau Black Bears in China, joining the team for the Asian Tournament.

"We are proud to announce the signing of ESM client 'Zaire Wade' to the @macaublackbears," the agency wrote in an Instagram post marking the move. "He will join his new team for @theasiantournament as his new journey begins in China."

Dwyane himself commented on the announcement with a simple message of support: "Love 🤝🏾".

What Comes Next

For now, the next step in the legal process sits with prosecutors. The case file is heading to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, which will weigh whether to pursue formal charges based on the felony domestic violence, criminal threats, and false imprisonment counts on which Zaire was booked.

The emergency protective order issued at the scene remains in place for the woman involved.

Neither Zaire nor Dwyane has spoken publicly about the arrest. The Wade family — including Dwyane, his wife Gabrielle Union, and his other children — has not issued a statement as of the initial reporting.

What began with a 911 call at 5:30 a.m. has placed the eldest Wade son in a very different kind of headline than the ones his father spent two decades earning on NBA hardwood.
