Rob Lowe Reveals His Secrets to a Long, Youthful Career in Hollywood

Rob Lowe has had one of the most enduring careers in Hollywood, and at 61, he still looks youthful. Appearing on the September 23 episode of 'Chicks in the Office,' the actor opened up about the mindset and habits that have kept both his career and himself going strong.

"I have just really followed what interests me, and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't, but I do think that helps for longevity," Lowe admitted during the September 23 interview.

He explained that he doesn’t let outside noise influence his choices, even if that means going against the norm. That being said, he’s not afraid to switch genres, host a game show, or write a memoir, despite being told that "the only people who write books are people who need money or who are washed up," he said.

Lowe refuses to play it safe, believing it’s what makes him last in the industry. "If you keep showing up in the same stuff, people think they've seen it. They figured you out," he said. Lowe also says it helps that he’s “always curious and game” and he still loves what he does.

Despite being in his sixties, Lowe has maintained a youthful appearance, admitting he also feels young. He credits his sobriety and his genes for that. "I don't drink. I've been sober for 36 years," he said, adding that his father, at 86, still looks like he's in his 70s. "That's my genetics really," he joked.

Lowe also prioritizes his sleep, saying, "I was sleeping before it was cool,” adding, "I'm good for five hours." He says the sleeping habit started when he was working as a child actor with very early call times, leaving him exhausted. He joked that he used to fake being sick just to stay home from school and sleep, and he would time it around “Full House” reruns so he could watch them at home. These days, Lowe also catches naps, saying, "I love a good nap now."

When it comes to his diet, Lowe admits he doesn’t always live up to the standard. He recalled Sylvester Stallone telling him, "Abs are made in the kitchen,” and though he refused to listen, he knew the “Rocky” star was right. "The food is going to catch up to you," he said, then joked that he intended to grab a meal at Five Guys right after the interview.

Lowe is currently promoting his latest film, 'The Musical,' where he plays Principal Brady opposite Will Brill, who plays Doug Leibowitz, a playwright-turned-teacher. In the film, which was released in theaters on September 18, Leibowitz seeks revenge on Brady after learning that Brady is dating his ex, played by Gillian Jacobs.

Come November, fans of Lowe will be delighted to know that a documentary about his life will be released on Netflix. The actor revealed this during his “Chicks in the Office” interview, though he noted this hasn’t been officially announced yet.
