Kansas City Chiefs Coordinator Eric Bieniemy's Wife Shot at Family Home

A family tragedy involving one of the NFL's best-known assistant coaches has left football fans stunned, with investigators still working to determine exactly what happened inside the Bieniemy family's Virginia home.

As authorities continue piecing together the events of Sunday evening, the biggest questions have centered on what unfolded inside the house, how badly Mia Bieniemy was hurt, and why Eric Bieniemy wasn't home when it happened.

Deputies were called to the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, at approximately 7:32 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, after receiving a report of a shooting, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

A Routine Summer Evening Suddenly Turned Into an Emergency

When they arrived, officers found an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment while deputies secured the scene.

Authorities later arrested 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, who now faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond as the investigation continues.

During a media briefing released on YouTube, Sheriff Mike Chapman confirmed the shooting involved members of the same family. "Well, we don't like to get into disclosing who the victim is, but yeah, it's a family-related issue — a domestic disturbance, and the person who shot — actually a family member shot another family member, and that's where we're at right now."

He later added:

"Yeah, it's apparently a domestic issue. So, there's no threat to the community, okay?"

Investigators Are Now Piecing Together What Happened

Asked what detectives still need to determine, Chapman said investigators are continuing to gather statements and evidence from everyone involved.

"Well, certainly, I mean, witness statements, anybody who was at the home when this occurred, uh, victim statements, uh, you know, his particular statements, which we're going through right now, uh, and uh you know, evidence that we've got to, you know, that we've got to pull together on this particular case."

"And so, those are the normal investigative processes that we go through on a case like this." He also noted that authorities were focused on ensuring the victim received care while the investigation moved forward.

"We want to make sure that we're covering all the bases here and that the victim here is being taken care of, that all the notifications have been made, and certainly the son is in custody right now. So, that's Elijah Bieniemy. He's in custody right now on no bond."

The First News on Mia Since the Shooting

As news of the shooting spread across the NFL, concern quickly shifted to whether Mia Bieniemy's injuries were life-threatening. Chapman offered encouraging news when reporters asked about her condition:

"No, from what we understand she's in a stable condition at the hospital, and her husband is with her [...] Her husband is the uh obviously connected with the Kansas City Chiefs, and so that's why this is big news here [sic]."

"So, so she had called in the mother who we know had called in the shooting, and it was involving the son, and so that's where we're at now."

Additional details reported by ESPN revealed that Mia, 57, suffered serious injuries after she was allegedly shot in the chest and arm.

Investigators Say There Were No Known Prior Incidents at the Home

Investigators have not yet disclosed what they believe sparked the domestic incident or whether there had been any previous disturbances at the family's home.

During Monday's briefing, the sheriff made it known that they "don't know of any incidents before at that particular residence as far as any prior arrest. I'm not aware of any, but we're going to go ahead and conduct that research.

Neighbors Also Say the Family Never Seemed Troubled

For those living near the Bieniemys, the news came as a complete surprise. Neighbors told NBC Washington they had recently seen Eric and Mia outside their home together and never imagined violence would erupt there just days later.

A neighbor of the Bieniemy family speaks with NBC Washington outside the Ashburn neighborhood, describing his shock over the shooting and recalling seeing the couple working outside their home together just days earlier.

One neighbor also shared his impressions of Elijah, saying, "The son is always very quiet. Doesn't cause any disturbance. This is very shocking for everybody."

As investigators continued piecing together what happened inside the home, many also wondered where Eric Bieniemy was when the shooting occurred.

Why Eric Bieniemy Wasn't Home When the Shooting Happened

According to ESPN, Bieniemy had been hundreds of miles away in St. Joseph, Missouri, attending the Kansas City Chiefs' training camp. The veteran coach had spent Sunday with the team during its second practice of camp.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Bieniemy was by his wife's side and that football had understandably taken a back seat. "Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy. Mia is stable, which is a plus. We all love EB, and you hate seeing those things happen."

Reid also confirmed there is no timetable for Bieniemy's return to the team, with pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier temporarily assuming his responsibilities.

"We'll just see how things go. [This is] real life, you take care of that. She's a saint, one of God's good blessings. But things happen."

The coach added, "These kinds of things happen, but there's always a blessing in there somewhere. I know things will work out. The most important thing is that EB has an opportunity to spend some time [with his family] and take care of that business. Everybody loves EB. He's a great person.

"Things happen. You have to work through it, and time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. It'll all work out in the long run."

The New York Times and The Athletic also reported that Bieniemy returned to Virginia to support his wife.

At the same time, the Chiefs initially released a brief statement saying, "The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Long Before This Week's Tragedy, Football Had Defined Eric Bieniemy's Life

Long before his family became the focus of heartbreaking headlines, Bieniemy had built a reputation as one of the NFL's most respected offensive coaches.

According to the Kansas City Chiefs, he is in his 11th season with the franchise and his sixth as offensive coordinator in 2026 after returning to Kansas City earlier this year.

Bieniemy first joined Reid's coaching staff in 2013 as the team's running backs coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018.

During his first stint in that role, he helped oversee one of the NFL's most explosive offenses, guiding the Chiefs to three Super Bowl appearances and two championships alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

His coaching journey later took him to the Washington Commanders, UCLA, and the Chicago Bears before he returned to Kansas City for the 2026 season.

Eric Bieniemy Once Spoke Proudly About His Sons

The latest developments stand in stark contrast to comments Bieniemy made years ago about the family that meant so much to him. In a 2011 interview with the Denver Post, Bieniemy reflected on fatherhood while discussing both of his sons.

Speaking about his oldest son, Eric III, who has cerebral palsy, he said, "He's the rock of the family. He runs the house. I always tell people, 'Do not feel sorry because my son has cerebral palsy.' We're on his schedule. He makes all of the decisions. He's doing great."

He also spoke warmly about Elijah, who was 13 years old at the time and beginning to play youth sports. "The thing about it is I'm just a dad. I'm there to support my son as he supports me on game day."
