DJ Spinderella Says 'Salt-N-Pepa' Fired Her from NKOTB Mixtape Tour
Forced to break the news herself, DJ Spinderella reveals she was terminated from the Salt-N-Pepa tour via e-mail back in January. “I refuse to participate in misleading fans," she wrote on Instagram.
DJ Spinderella broke her silence over her termination from Salt-N-Pepa’s tour. In response to a recent interview of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton who were promoting their show, “Ladies Night,” Spinderella, aka Deidra Roper, opened up on her social media about being fired from the tour months ago.
FORCED TO SPEAK UP
Roper’s Instagram post detailed that she received an emailed letter in January delivering the unfortunate news after promotions of her participation had already been made. She was supposed to join Salt-N-Pepa with the New Kids on The Block on the “#NOKTB MixedTape Tour” which kicked off in Cincinnati at the start of this month.
“It was my expectation, after making that decision, that they would also take responsibility for sharing the news with the public and other affected parties. It has been months now with no mention."
Roper admitted being surprised when there was no mention of her termination to the public since she received the email. During James and Denton’s recent interview with The Grio’s Demetria Irwin, they were also evasive when asked about Spinderella’s whereabouts. This prompted Roper to come out and clarify her absence the day after the interview aired on BET.
“I refuse to participate in misleading fans, ticketholders, and others who — based on all the advertising — were anticipating seeing the iconic #SaltnPepa and #Spinderella trio. So, I’m making it clear now.”
SETTING THINGS STRAIGHT
“I’m deeply saddened to share with all the #SaltnPepa and #Spinderella fans that I will not be performing on the #NKOTB Mixtape Tour,” she began.
“Despite my participation in promoting the tour and being highly publicized as one of the acts, in January 2019 I received a ‘termination’ email from #SaltnPepa excluding me from performances with the group.
“It was my expectation, after making that decision, that they would also take responsibility for sharing the news with the public and other affected parties. It has been months now with no mention. Out of love for my fans and a commitment to upholding a standard of professionalism, I’ve taken it upon myself to let everyone know."
Roper explained that her intention in telling the world about her termination was to avoid confusion among fans who were aware through the tour’s marketing efforts that she was supposed to be part of it.
“I refuse to participate in misleading fans, ticketholders, and others who — based on all the advertising — were anticipating seeing the iconic #SaltnPepa and #Spinderella trio. So, I’m making it clear now.”
Roper ended her message by assuring her followers that they will see more of her in other projects.
“I look forward to seeing you all then. Thank you, Spinderella”
SALT-N-PEPA BOUNCES BACK
Roper has been part of Salt-N-Pepa as its resident DJ since 1987. The last time Roper performed with James and Denton was last fall during the trio’s Las Vegas residency.
The group has been making a comeback in several avenues lately. Apart from their new BET show, “Ladies Night” where they’re joined by members of 90s R&B group, SWV, Lifetime Network announced in March that an unscripted series is in the works featuring the story of the trio’s rise to fame.
Proof of the group’s revived popularity is also evident in controversies surrounding members James and Denton lately. For instance, Denton was recently slammed for photos that seem to suggest she went under the knife. Likewise, James was in the news after she opened up on her BET show about her painful divorce after 28 years of marriage.
Meanwhile, Roper’s termination is also gaining mileage now that it’s out in the open. Fans have been showing support for her after her honest admission. It’s unclear why she was terminated from the group but suspicions are high a rift has formed between her and her former groupmates.
