Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Delivers a Powerful Speech at the MTV Awards
Dwayne Johnson has everyone in awe after he delivered a lengthy and rather heartfelt speech at the recently held MTV Awards.
This year's MTV Awards show held recently, and even they, lauded Johnson, who is most popularly known as “The Rock,” for his excellent speech.
The MTV team shared on June 17:
“Feelin' really inspired after @TheRock 's speech!!”
Many agreed with this and took to the comment section to voice their admiration. One fan, @Isabella_EM implored others to watch the event as she replied saying:
“To everyone who is in #GCWeb19 this is a must watch video! He talks about being authentic and your true self! Thank you, @TheRock for such an inspiring speech.”
Another supportive fan, @Bernard_J wrote:
“This man has been inspirational to me since age 7! I am who I am looking up to him. #THEROCK.”
Johnson's time on the stage is regarded by many as one of the highlights of the show. It started when the host, Zachary Levi, introduced the actor and former wrestler to the audience by listing out his numerous achievements so far. Some of his most notable roles also aired on a large screen to the audience, and after that, the actor made a very grand entrance.
Johnson thrilled fans, both at home and at the event, with the performance of a Samoan dance to Queen’s iconic hit, “We Will Rock You.” He even had his nickname boldly spelt out in flames on a screen behind the dancers.
It was after he received the award – the Generation Award – that he rendered the speech. It had him recalling the time he first ventured into the film industry, a time he labelled “miserable.”
The “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” star disclosed that he met a hurdle in the form of his huge weight which he was advised to reduce if he wanted to realise his acting dreams. He explained that, back then, Hollywood seemed to have nothing for him. Johnson said:
“They didn’t know what the hell to do with me,”
The father of three said continuing his speech,
“I was told at that time; you’ve gotta be a certain way. You’ve gotta drop some weight; you’ve gotta be somebody different, you’ve gotta stop working out, stop doing the things that I love, you’ve gotta stop calling yourself ‘The Rock.’”
Johnson is the evidence that the rampant struggles with body image in Hollywood are not limited to the actresses as he affirmed that he “bought into” the advice until the reality of just how “miserable” he had become dawned on him.
Thankfully, that was what made Johnson decide to be his “authentic self.” He proudly said:
“I was miserable doing that, so I made a choice. The choice was I wasn’t gonna conform to Hollywood, Hollywood was gonna conform to me,”
The famous star concluded the powerful speech on an appreciative note by thanking his fans and family.
When he is not playing the sweet buff on screen, Johnson is busy with his daddy duties. Just recently, the macho star took to Instagram to cutesy share details of how he ended Memorial Day by watching “The Incredibles” with his little daughter “for the 57th time.”
