Inside the Relationship of Michael Douglas and Son Cameron Who Spent Almost 7 Years behind Bars

While Michael Douglas and his son, Cameron had a troubled past, their bond turned into an “amazing relationship” after his release from prison.

Cameron’s struggles with addiction caught up with him in 2009 when he got put under house arrest. His girlfriend at the time, Kelly Scott got caught trying to smuggle him heroin hidden in an electric toothbrush for which she spent seven months in jail.

But the link between romance and drugs didn’t stop there as one of his defense lawyers, Jennifer Ridha, also tried sneaking him drugs in prison during their relationship.

Then came Cameron’s prison sentence of five years in 2010 for selling methamphetamine and possession of heroin. Later his sentence got extended when he confessed to smuggling drugs into prison.

Initially, he had been scheduled for release in 2018, but after nearly seven years in prison, he got released in August 2016 and sent to live in a New York halfway house.

Since then, Cameron told PEOPLE in 2017, that he had grown close to his father, Michael Douglas. “In difficult times, we tend to come closer. It is a beautiful sort of trait that we have. My father and I have an amazing relationship. I love spending time with him, and I will spend as much time with him as I can,” he said.

Shortly after his release, Cameron got spotted with his new girlfriend and Brazilian yoga instructor, Viviane Thibes.

The couple welcomed their first child on December 18, 2017, and thrilled by the new addition to the family, Micheal shared the news with PEOPLE in a statement and wrote, “We’re all ecstatic about baby Lua!”

Cameron joined his father on the red carpet in June 2018 for the premiere of his father’s film “Ant-Man and the Wasp” at El Capitan Theatre. During a quick chat with US Weekly, Michael joked about grandfatherhood.

“I was telling [Cameron]. I love Lua; she’s gorgeous. Grandchildren are great when you’re an empty-nester, and you don’t have anybody, and then you’ve got a grandkid, but when you still have kids in the house, it’s like, ‘Oh, OK. great,’” he said.

While Cameron is Michael’s son with his ex-wife Diandra Luker, his two children Dylan and Carys with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones is yet to fly the coop.

When Father’s Day came around later that month, Cameron paid a sweet tribute to his father on Instagram.

Alongside a throwback picture of the pair he wrote, "Been there through thick and thin, never once did you quit on me...I Love you with all my heart. HappyFathers day Dad!”
