'Family Matters' Star Reveals Shocking Behind-the-Scenes Drama That Rocked Beloved '90s Sitcom — Her Photos Then and Now
A recent statement from a former child star has reignited interest in one of television's most puzzling sitcom disappearances. For years, fans have wondered what really happened behind the scenes.
At one point, she was appearing weekly in millions of American homes as part of one of TV's most beloved sitcom families. Then, without warning, she disappeared from the show entirely.

The sudden exit became a long-running pop-culture mystery, especially because her character was never mentioned again. Decades later, former cast members' interviews, reunion drama, and the actress's own comments continue to fuel speculation about what happened on the set of "Family Matters."

The Sitcom Mystery Fans Never Forgot
When "Family Matters" premiered in 1989, the series quickly became a major part of ABC's TGIF lineup.

The sitcom followed the Winslow family in Chicago and starred Reginald VelJohnson, Jo Marie Payton, Darius McCrary, Kellie Shanygne Williams, and Jaimee Foxworth as the youngest Winslow sibling, Judy.

Foxworth was just a child when she joined the show. As Steve Urkel, played by Jaleel White, became the breakout star of the series, the sitcom gradually shifted focus.

By the end of season four, Judy Winslow suddenly disappeared from the storyline altogether. There was no goodbye episode. No explanation from the writers. The character was simply gone.

Fans noticed immediately, and decades later, many still reference Judy's disappearance as one of television's strangest sitcom exits.

Jo Marie Payton later admitted she was unhappy with the decision. During a 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress recalled asking producers why Foxworth was no longer appearing at rehearsals.

"For me, it was a bad decision," Payton said. "When I asked what happened to her, as she wasn't at rehearsal, I was told that it didn't matter. Nobody's gonna notice. They took my baby."

The Reunion Snub That Reopened Old Questions
Interest in Foxworth's departure intensified again in 2017 after "Entertainment Weekly" published a "Family Matters" reunion cover featuring much of the original cast — except Foxworth.

The omission immediately sparked backlash online from fans asking one question: Where's Judy Winslow?

Foxworth later addressed the situation during an interview with The Root. "I was not invited at all. I wasn't even contacted," she said.

According to Foxworth, cast member Shawn Harrison privately warned her before the reunion images were released so she would not be blindsided. Foxworth also rejected suggestions that her later adult-film career may have contributed to the decision.

"I don't think there's any good explanation. If they want to use adult films as the reason, I'm not the first person to do adult films and won't be the last," she said.

The actress admitted that being written off the sitcom at such a young age had a lasting impact on her. "It affected my self-esteem as an actress."

Former Cast Interviews Added More Fuel
Over the years, several former "Family Matters" stars have publicly discussed Foxworth's departure and life after the sitcom. Darius McCrary, who played Eddie Winslow, said in one interview that nobody from the cast was able to help her situation.

"And none of us could save her, no matter what," he said. "There's nothing we could have [done]." McCrary also suggested that tensions behind the scenes partly involved Foxworth's mother, Gwyn Foxx, who managed her daughters' entertainment careers.

He explained that producers and writers sometimes clashed with parents over how young Black characters were portrayed onscreen. McCrary said his own mother often intervened over scripts and stereotypes, while suggesting Foxworth's mother handled conflicts differently.

McCrary later addressed Foxworth's adult-film career in another interview and said he did not view it negatively. "We look at [the adult film career] like it's a bad thing, man," he said.

He added that he was "proud of her" and said, "She did an amazing job, and it is what it is."

Jaleel White later shared his own memories in his memoir "Growing Up Urkel," describing Foxx as "a caricature stage mom" and claiming she frequently clashed with production.

White wrote that Foxworth's mother believed Jaimee deserved preferential treatment on the set because she had joined the sitcom before he did.

Years later, Foxworth said White continued speaking negatively about her in interviews despite her remaining silent publicly for years.

Foxworth Speaks About Her Experience
During a 2021 episode of "The S.H.E. Show" podcast, she said those comments eventually pushed her to publicly address her own experiences for the first and last time.

Foxworth described White as a bully and claimed he frequently targeted her while they worked together as children. "Contrary to what Jaleel was saying, there is no better way to put it than Jaleel was a bully to me," she said.

Foxworth claimed White repeatedly mocked her on set and made her feel isolated while they worked together.

"He was too busy being an absolute terror to me," she said. "Jaleel was a terror to me." She also alleged that White once locked her inside a dark dressing room when she was nine years old.

"He would make scenes in front of adults that were writing the cheques that were writing the shows, that were producing the shows, just to make a mockery out of me for no reason," she claimed.

Foxworth said she believed White made it clear that he did not want her around and questioned his past denials about involvement in her firing.

"So when it comes to him saying that he was not involved in the firing or the letting go, I don't necessarily believe that 100 percent," she said.

Foxworth explained that she stayed quiet for years because she did not want to create unnecessary drama surrounding the sitcom. "I always took the higher road because I just didn't want to be messy," she said.

Life After 'Family Matters'
After leaving television, Foxworth experienced several difficult years away from Hollywood. She later spoke openly about battling substance abuse and eventually appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."

She also faced public scrutiny for appearing in adult films under the name Crave. Still, Foxworth insisted she was not ashamed of her past. "The only pain I inflicted on anyone was myself," she told The Root.

In 2009, the former actress welcomed her son, Michael Douglas Shaw Jr., with longtime partner, Michael Shaw. Speaking to People after his birth, Foxworth reflected on moving forward after years of hardship.

"I've been through a lot of pain in the past and ... I now look forward to years of joy to share with my child," she said. Motherhood later became a major focus in her life.

Her Recent Message Sparked Fresh Attention
Nearly 30 years after "Family Matters" ended, Foxworth recently returned to social media with a pointed message directed at people continuing to discuss her in interviews.
"Listen. If ya'll can't do interviews without talking about me, then maybe ya'll shouldn't do them because clearly I'm the highlight," she wrote in an April 2026 Instagram post.
Jaimee Foxworth added, "We're at almost 30 years since the show ended. Stop riding off me."
She ended the statement with a warning. "Leave. Me. Alone. I am not the one you want to start doing 'interviews'."
