Kathie Lee Gifford, 72, Looks Unrecognizable After Revealing She Had Multiple Surgeries — Photos

The television personality posted the images after opening up in a recent interview about the physical challenges she has faced over the past several years. While many followers praised her recovery, others said they barely recognized the former "Today" host.

The Photos Prompted Very Different Reactions

The Recovery Came After One Setback Led to Another
In the People's cover story, Gifford revealed that what began with one major surgery soon became a string of medical setbacks.
She said she underwent a total hip replacement just over a year ago. After becoming too active while playing with her grandchildren, she fractured the repaired hip and needed another surgery.

The challenges continued. Gifford said she later broke her arm after rolling over on it one night. A separate fall on uneven pavement caused another broken bone, and after noticing changes in her depth perception, she underwent cataract surgery.
Looking back on the series of procedures, she joked to the publication, "I feel like Mr. Potato Head! One thing falls off and then another. But you have to have a sense of humor about everything. Thank God I've never lost that, even in my bleakest moments. I'm a tough broad."
Earlier Interviews Revealed How Severe the Damage Had Become
When Gifford first spoke publicly about her hip replacement in July 2024, she told "Today" that she had endured months of severe pain while doctors struggled to determine what was causing it.
"They had been looking for the problem in my spine," she recalled. "They finally found out what it was, and by that time, I'd been in such agonizing pain."
Her surgeon later told her he had rarely seen a hip in such poor condition.

"My doctor finished the surgery, came in to tell me it went beautifully, and then he said, 'Kathie, how have you been existing all this time?'" Gifford recalled during the interview.
In a separate interview with the same publication following the operation, Gifford said the procedure became necessary because her "hips [were] down to the nubs."
She admitted she underestimated how difficult recovery would be.
"I walked, I climbed, I walked," she recalled, explaining that she was off her walker within two days and stopped taking pain medication after three.
She said she quickly resumed everyday activities, including signing books and preparing for work, but soon realized she had pushed herself beyond what her body could handle.
"And you can't. I have learned from this that you only can only do so much. You're just human. You're just human. And I'm so grateful," she explained.
Gifford also said her surgeon believed decades of staying active had contributed to the condition of her hips.
"You climbed mountains, you made movies, you got on stages. You never took off your high heels, and you kept going and that's why you're going through what you're going through," she recalled him saying.
Doctors Eventually Found the Real Cause of Her Pain
Gifford later shared more details about her diagnosis during an interview with Fox News, explaining that doctors initially treated her for a spinal condition before discovering the pain was actually coming from her hip.
"Thank God, I finally had the hip surgery. I had been misdiagnosed," she said. "And for a year they kept trying to treat my spine. And I said, 'I have no pain in my spine. It's in my hip. I don't know how you missed that on an X-ray.'"
She said the full extent of the damage became clear only after the operation.

According to Gifford, her Tennessee surgeon told her, "That's one of the worst hips I've ever seen. In fact, you didn't have one," explaining that little remained except arthritic ash and tiny bone spurs.
The long recovery also changed her daily life.

Returning to the recent cover story, Gifford said the chronic pain became so overwhelming that she stopped going out in public because she wanted people to remember the energetic woman they expected to see.
She recalled that her late husband, Frank Gifford, had expressed similar feelings before his death, telling her he wanted people to remember him at his best.

Describing how difficult that period became, Gifford said, "But when you're in pain, it's so debilitating, and everything's a grimace. I've had emotional pain many times in my life, but never this chronic physical pain where you literally want to go home to Jesus."
Today, she says that chapter is finally behind her. Thanks to multiple surgeries, stem cell therapy, and physical therapy six days a week, Gifford told the publication she is once again able to run "all over the place" with her grandchildren.

Long before her latest health update, Gifford revisited another life-changing experience during a February 2025 podcast interview — one involving an FBI warning, a death threat, and an unexpected act of help she has never forgotten.
Gifford made a revealing appearance on the "Sage Steele Podcast."
During the interview, she reflected on many things, including her decades-long career, the enduring grief of losing her husband, and her complex friendship with President Donald Trump.
Dressed casually in a knitted sweater and jeans, Gifford also shared a harrowing story from 31 years ago when she was preparing to host the Miss America Pageant.
She had her newborn daughter with her when the FBI contacted her husband, warning that a dangerous criminal was on the loose and targeting his wife.
The FBI urged Gifford's husband to continue as if nothing was wrong so the criminal wouldn't realize they were onto him. Her husband, however, refused to proceed without securing his wife's safety.

Amid the chaos, he immediately turned to none other than Trump for help. The president, without hesitation, assured Gifford's husband that he would handle the situation personally.
"[...] Donald said — this is why I will love this man for my whole life — he said, 'Frank don't you worry about it. I've got your girls. I've got your girls and don't you worry," Gifford recalled, holding back tears.

According to the singer-songwriter, Gifford's husband then called the FBI back, informing them that he had Trump's word that he would take care of the situation.
Knowing nothing about what was going on, Gifford then received a call from Trump himself the next day, who told her he was sending his private helicopter to ensure she and her daughter returned home safely, as well as security guards for her protection.

She was then greeted by an extensive security detail. "There were four of his security guys there," she recalled, still piecing together the extent of his intervention.
For days, she had round-the-clock protection, with armed guards stationed outside her hotel room. It wasn't until the day of the pageant that she fully grasped the gravity of the situation.

Picking up a newspaper, she was stunned to see a headline about a death threat against her. "I read it and thought, 'Oh, I'm kind of interested in that story,'" she recounted. Only then did she realize the extent of the danger and the measures that had been taken to protect her.
Despite the chilling revelation, Gifford refused to be intimidated. When asked if she wanted to back out of hosting, she responded firmly, "Hell no! Nobody's going to make me afraid."
The show went on as planned, with Trump's security detail remaining by her side. After the pageant, Gifford was discreetly taken home via a different route to avoid any lingering threats. Unbeknownst to her, an FBI agent had also been stationed at her home in Connecticut, protecting her three-year-old son, Cody.

Days later, while at the movies with her son, an FBI agent approached her with the news that the suspect had been captured. His capture brought relief, but the terrifying ordeal remained a vivid memory.

"That's my friend. Donald saved my life, saved my daughter's life and if I called him today [he] would save it again. [...] People don't know that about him," Gifford said.
