A PIECE OF ADVICE

Van Der Beek recently said that there are several ways to bring up children, and through all these, one thing is for sure -- kids will teach parents the best way to raise them.

The actor acknowledged the many advice people and books give parents but also claims that each child is different, thus needs a style that will fit their personality. He ended his post by providing the best advice:

“Connect with them every chance you get. Because it’s all an opportunity for connection.”

Five kids deep... all I can conclude is there’s no one “right way” to raise a tiny human. BUT - the good new is... kids will totally teach you how to raise them. I swear. It’s not about how you think they “should” be raised, or how that book you read says to raise them, or how your parents raised you, or even how you raised their sibling - ‘cause each kid is different. They come out the box with different strengths, different challenges, different personalities and different needs. But if you listen with an open heart... they’ll totally make it clear what all those needs are. *And then they’ll change them. 😂 That’s why I feel like the best #parenting advice I ever got was: Connect with them every chance you get. Because it’s all an opportunity for connection.

Van Der Beek also believes that being honest with is children is something that helps in their upbringing. He shared with PEOPLE:

“Use the right terms; use the correct terminology. There is no shame if you talk about things bluntly. If you don’t make it weird, it’s not weird.”

FIVE ADORABLE CHILDREN

Van Der Beek is also a frequent Instagram user, mostly sharing photos and clips of his family, including his five kids: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, and Gwendolyn.

In the later part of 2019, Van Der Beek announced that he and his wife were expecting a baby number six, but shortly after, they lost the child.

The “Dawson Creek” star gets by with a lot of help from his wife, Kimberly Brook. Together, the couple has been through heaven and hell, including suffering a miscarriage.

Wrecked. Devastated. In shock. That’s how we’re feeling right now after the soul we thought were going to welcome into our family in April... has taken a short cut to whatever lies beyond this life. We’ve been through this before, but never this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to @vanderkimberly and her well-being. Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one. Thank you to all of our friends and co-workers (and dance partners) who have shown up for us so beautifully during this time. As many of you have said, “There are no words...” and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today.
