Dwight Yoakam is an American singer-songwriter and actor born on October 23, 1956, in Pikeville, Kentucky. He shot to fame in the mid-1980s after releasing his self-financed 1986 debut album, "Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.," and quickly earned a reputation for his pioneering style of country music.

When Yoakam began his music career, Nashville was tilted toward pop "urban cowboy" music, and his style of hip honky-tonk music was not considered marketable at the time.
