DEVOTION

For Karen her family comes first, which is why she dropped her career as a successful Indianapolis lawyer to go into business with her daughter, rehabilitating houses.

In order to found their company Two Chicks and a Hammer back in 2008, Karen and Mina went into debt, mortgaged their houses, and talked friends and family into investing.

At the time, neither woman had any experience with construction, and in order to learn how to restore and refit the properties they took on, Karen admits she spent hours googling "how-to" sites and YouTube videos and figuring out how to lay tiles and hang wallpaper.

The two women's determination and hard work led to the company's growing success, though every cent they made was plowed back into their next big project, and always in their beloved Indianapolis.

What should have been a day of joy turned into a nightmare when someone burglarized Karen's house while she was at the wedding.

GOING ON TV

In 2016 Karen and Mina were offered a golden opportunity, and their work became the subject of the HGTV show, "Good Bones." This allowed them to consolidate their goal.

Karen and Mina are determined to make palpable changes, not to restore isolated houses in one neighborhood, but to renovate whole zones, and bring about change in the communities.

THE DIAGNOSIS

It was in the first years of "Good Bones" that Karen's beloved fourth husband Roger was diagnosed with cancer. The hardworking Karen didn't drop the show or any of the work and still supported her husband 100%.

Karen's first husband was Casey Starsiak, with whom she shares 3 children, one of whom is Mina. Her second husband was Randy, with whom she shares her youngest daughter Kelsy.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE

Karen's third marriage was with a man named Mick, and sadly it didn't last. She was to find love at last with Randy. Although she has never revealed their love story, Karen's love for her husband is obvious in the many posts she shares on Instagram.

Karen is a loving mom and a doting grandmother to several grandchildren, but she keeps her family out of the limelight, and the only grandbaby we know about is Mina's son, Jack, now 2.

ROBBED

Karen's youngest daughter, Kelsey married on November 7, 2020, but what should have been a day of joy turned into a nightmare when someone burglarized Karen's house while she was at the wedding.

Not content with robbing her, the criminals defecated in her garage as an additional insult. Karen's credit cards were also stolen, and she hopes that the thieves might be identified through video records.

RETIRED

Karen retired from Two Chicks and a Hammer and spending more time with her husband and grandchildren, but she is keeping her hand in, continuing her work on "Good Bones," and the Indianapolis community.
