Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's exit from the royal family became one of the trending topics last year. The couple left their roles as senior members of the royal family in search of much independent life.

Following their exit, royal correspondent Omid Scobie said that Markle spent her last days as a royal family member carrying out some last-minute tasks and holding meetings with scholars.

According to reports from Glamour, the 39-year-old met with Scobie, who shared her last emotional moment with her before she stepped down. The royal reporter recalled Markle saying,

"It didn't have to be this way."

He described her at that moment as broken, upset, and looking vulnerable. Scobie said he observed Markle in those final moments and realized that the entire saga was the fault of the institution that refused to protect its own.

The long-time royal correspondent reportedly remarked that it was never the intention of the 36-year-old Prince Harry and his wife to distance themselves from their beloved royal family.

Markle has previously accused members of the royal family of helping to spread false information about her and Harry.

Scobie revealed that contrary to popular belief that the couple left because they could not have their way, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tried making it work before pushing for an exit.

The "Finding Freedom" co-author explained that the mother of one would not be the first woman married to the royal family to face negative criticism from the press. He pointed out that previous women were left battered and bruised.

For the royal correspondent, the problem does not lie with the women married into the royal family, but instead, it lies in the treatment of the women and the institution's failure to defend them.

Markle has previously accused members of the royal family of helping to spread false information about her and Harry to further discredit them in the public's eyes.

Besides knowing what the Duchess of Sussex said last before she left the royal family, the world was given a detailed insight into the couple's life as royal family members after their interview with Oprah aired.

Since the interview aired, lots of reactions have been coming from viewers who have thrown their weight behind the couple for refusing to be bullied.
