Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s divorce has attracted some attention in recent years, putting their previous relationships in the spotlight, including Heard’s with Tasya van Ree.

Photographer Tasya van Ree and Amber Heard began dating around 2008, but the actress only came out publicly in 2010 at a GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) ceremony in Los Angeles.

The “Aquaman” star admitted that GLAAD was one of the many reasons she could come out, adding that while she hated the idea of a label, “I’m with who I’m with, I love who I love.”

Heard elaborated on not being in the closet in Hollywood even after knowing that not many openly gay or bisexual actresses are successful in the industry. She pointed out she was never in the closet.

When she and van Ree were dating, some people would take photos of them holding hands. At that point, Heard realized she had two options: let go of her hand and avoid the topic during interviews, or don’t let go and “own it.”

Apart from that, Heard admitted that she was not lesbian or bisexual as she doesn’t identify as anything. She’s just “a person,” and she likes who she likes.

The actress labeled the “LGBTQ+ thing” as “limiting” as it used to be a great shield, but people are stuck behind it. For Heard, resisting labels is paramount as the only thing that matters is that we’re all humans.

2009 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARREST

After being in a relationship for four years, Amber Heard and Tasya Van Ree parted ways in 2012. However, they were involved in some controversy at the start of their love story.

In September 2009, Heard was arrested by Port of Seattle Police at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington State after allegedly getting into “a fracas,” grabbing, and striking van Ree’s arm.

Heard was charged for misdemeanor assault in the fourth degree/domestic violence, but prosecutors didn’t press charges, and the arrest information on the case was eventually deleted from the system.

In 2016, van Ree explained that her ex-girlfriend had been “wrongfully accused,” adding that the incident was blown out of proportion and that two police officers misinterpreted and “over-sensationalized” it.

Before saying that the fact that Heard’s integrity is being questioned was “disheartening,” the Hawaiian artist and photographer added:

“I recount hints of misogynistic attitudes toward us, which later appeared to be homophobic when they found out we were domestic partners.”
