Italy is mourning the tragic loss of fourteen people, including a child, after a cable accident in northern Italy on May 23. According to news reports, a cable car plunged to the ground with occupants, leaving several dead people.

A spokesperson for the National Alpine Speleological Rescue Corps revealed that the faulty cable snapped on that fateful Sunday morning while conveying its occupants from the Lido di Stresa piazza on Lake Maggiore to the nearby Piedmont region's Mottarone mountain.

The cable car traveled this 20-minute voyage at the top of the mountain about 4,891 feet above sea level when the cable suddenly snapped almost a thousand feet from the top of the mountain.

The vehicle reportedly crashed into a wooded area near the summit of the Stresa-Mottarone line in the Piedmont region, trapping its occupants inside until the rescue team came to the site to lift out the victims.

Upon transporting the victims of the crash to Turin hospital, one of the two children sadly passed away before even getting there.

The National Alpine Speleological Rescue Corps also revealed that the second child found in the wreckage made it to the hospital alive and remains in critical condition. The child is the only survivor of the cable crash so far.

Authorities expressed sympathy to the deceased's loved ones in a statement released the same day after the incident. They have begun to look into changing some infrastructure to prevent such tragedies from ever occurring again.
