Parable of the Day: A Rich Couple Throws a Big New Year Party at Their House
This story is a parable that will help teach about respecting all people, whether rich or poor. A rich young couple learned the hard way that you should never judge a book by its cover.
A rich young couple was set to throw a huge New Year’s party at their house. So they decided to do their shopping at a market that sold high-cost products at fixed prices.
They chose to shop at the expensive market because they wanted to maintain their high standards, so they didn’t mind paying extra. After shopping, they decided to get someone to deliver for them.

The couple called a porter who would deliver all their items to their home. The person who arrived was a poor older man who didn’t look too healthy, and his clothes were torn and ragged.
The older man didn’t look like he could even afford to meet his daily needs. The couple asked him what he would charge for the safe delivery of their groceries to their home in his cart.

He told them he would charge just $25. Even though the quoted cost was well below the market rate of the couple’s neighborhood, they still argued with him about the price, and they eventually settled for $15.
The porter settled for the low amount because he struggled to afford even one meal and needed to earn whatever he could. The rich pair was quite proud of how they bargained with the older man.

So, they paid him $15 in advance and left the market after giving the older man their address. They managed to get home long before the porter arrived with their items.
After waiting for two hours for delivery, the wife started getting upset. She shouted at her husband and told him that he shouldn’t have trusted a person who couldn’t even afford to feed himself.

The wife angrily speculated that the porter had just chosen to steal all their stuff and disappear. She suggested that they should go to the market to inquire and then to the police station to open a case.
They came across another porter on their way to the marker and stopped him to ask about the older man. Upon seeing all their groceries with the younger man, the woman accused him and the older man of theft.

The younger man told her to calm down and explained that the older man had been unwell for a while and wasn’t earning enough to afford food. The elderly porter was on his way to deliver the grocery but got severely sick.
The younger man came across him on the road, and the older porter gave him the $15, and his last words were a plea that he delivers the items to the couple. The man was poor but honest.

The younger porter explained that he was just on his way to complete the older man’s last delivery. After hearing the whole story, the rich husband had tears welling up in his eyes.
His wife couldn’t even look at him because of the shame she felt. The moral of the story is: Class doesn’t determine one’s level of honesty, and people should be respected no matter their status or financial standing.
