'I Know What It's Like to Not Be Loved': Harrowing Moment Boy Comforts a Dying Dog
A couple decided to put down their dog after the doctor told them about her worsening health condition. When they shared the tragic news with their young son, he decided to hold his furry friend as she breathed her last breath.
There's something so genuine and pure about the way animals are attached to their human friends. At the same time, keeping pets or caring for animals teaches us to be kind, considerate, and selfless and brings out our parental instincts.
The Gay family was fond of keeping dogs, but they preferred adopting older dogs. Their beloved son, Robbie Gay, also shared their affinity and incessant love for senior dogs.

ADOPTING ROBBIE
Maria and Charles Gay adopted Robbie in July 2019. Before entering their lives, he had stayed in foster care for some time and had endured sheer neglect and abuse.
While the Gay family was delighted to have Robbie as their son, they had no idea that he would soon become an inseparable part of their lives. He filled their hearts and home with never-ending joy and love.
Most importantly, he shared the same love for adopting animals as his adoptive parents, so they soon welcomed an older dog named Buffy. As was expected, Robbie and Buffy became the best of buddies.
VIRAL FACEBOOK POST
Maria took to her Facebook on February 7, 2020, to share a story about putting their beloved Buffy to sleep. The post, which included Robbie's heartwarming reaction to putting down his furry buddy, went viral. Its caption read:
“Well, today didn’t go as we hoped but it’s in the hardest of times we learn the best lessons and feel the most gratitude."
The social media post included a picture of young Robbie crying with Buffy resting on his lap. His mother had her arms wrapped around her son as she tried to comfort him.
LOSING BUFFY
As it turned out, Robbie's parents had taken Buffy for her teeth cleaning and extraction. Before administering anesthesia, the doctor decided to examine her properly and discovered she had advanced kidney failure. The Facebook post said:
"As a family, we decided that the kindest and most loving thing to do would be to let her [Buffy] go before she lost her will to live and stopped eating and drinking.
Maria explained that she didn't want to keep Robbie out of the decision because she knew how much he loved Buffy. She picked him up from school and told him everything in detail.
FAREWELL FURRY FRIEND
Robbie told his mom he wanted to be the one to hold Buffy as she breathed her last breath. Maria mentioned how proud she was of her son for having a heart that felt for older animals and didn't want them to suffer. The young boy said to his mom:
“I know how it feels not to be loved or cared for and I don’t want any animal of mine to ever feel that way. It’s only sad for us when they go to heaven. It’s a happy day for them. Thank you for being proud of me."
The proud mother also gave further details about her beloved son and his love for dogs after her touching Facebook post began circulating online.
LOVE FOR SENIOR DOGS
Maria explained that she and her family loved adopting older dogs, and their son shared the same passion. She said that Robbie was aware that the longer a kid stayed in foster care, the slimmer became his chances of being adopted.
The young boy could relate to senior dogs on an entirely different level, given his love for his adoptive parents, who had chosen to adopt him instead of a newborn baby.
Robbie reminded his parents every now and then that even though they had known him for two years, they loved him as if it had been forever. Maria thinks her son is "the coolest" and we couldn't agree more. He's also wise beyond his years.
