Teenage pregnancy can sometimes lead to one making the wrong decisions, especially when it isn't planned. However, it is hard to imagine a person would decide to keep their pregnancy despite circumstances and go through labor, only to throw the child away.

Searching through a dumpster one day, some strangers heard a weird sound. Following the direction of the noise, they discovered a baby lying in the trash. Not knowing what to do, the strangers notified authorities.

A BABY IN THE DUMPSTER

While the holiday spirit was still in the air, with many kicking off the new year spending time with their families, some did not know what to do with theirs. On January 7, 2022, the Hobbs Police Department officers received notice of a baby found in a dumpster.

Upon arrival at the reported scene, the officer retrieved and quickly transported the infant to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The child was subsequently transferred to Lubbock hospital for other pediatric care.

However, during investigations, authorities retrieved surveillance video of the scenes before the baby's discovery and later located a suspect's vehicle. Officers were also able to capture a suspect who confessed to being the infant's biological mother.

ABANDONED INFANT'S MOTHER

After detectives tracked down the vehicle owner, who was seen in the surveillance video, they went to her house, where her parents said she was sleeping. But, according to Police Chief August Fons, the suspect's parents later drove her to the police station.

18-year-old Alexis Avila confessed to giving birth to the child and dumping her baby in the trash at a location far from the place of birth. She told police she had no idea she was pregnant until January 6.

According to Avila, the only indication she had of the pregnancy was the abdominal discomfort she experienced a day before delivery. However, Avila was arrested and charged with attempted murder and child abuse.

THE KID'S FATHER

After Avila's arrest, authorities proceeded with investigations to locate the infant's father, whom they eventually found. According to reports, the abandoned baby's grandfather Oscar Astorga said his 16-year-old son is the father, and the family wants custody of the child.

50-year-old Astorga said his son Stephen wasn't aware his ex-girlfriend Avila, 18, was pregnant until he saw a video of her cruelly dumping their child into the trash behind a shopping center in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Stephen's phone and text were investigated. Text messages exchanged by the young dad and a friend confirmed he thought Avila had a miscarriage and had no idea he was a father until he was notified of her arrest.

However, the infant's grand-dad revealed that his family is trying to gain custody of his grandchild. He added that the family had hired a lawyer to help them get custody of the baby they named Saul.

This mirrors the story of an Orlando woman who dropped her infant at a stranger's doorstep with a note stating that the baby's father tried to kill them, in 2019. Read the full story here.
