An older man was driving home on a rainy afternoon when he noticed two young boys walking in the rain. He decides to let them in his car and drive them to the city, only to see them on his doorstep the following day with something to say.

David Evans was driving down a road when he noticed two young boys walking hurriedly under the rain. They were completely soaked, yet they kept walking.

Several cars before David's didn't bother to check on the boys, so David decided to do it himself and ask if they needed any help.

"Kids, it's pouring. Why are you still walking in the rain? Why not wait a while until it stops?" he asked them.

The boys shook their heads. "We really need to get to the city, sir. The bus we were riding broke down along the way, and no one wants to take us because we're drenched from the rain," one of the boys explained.

"We don't have much time left, so we can't wait for the rain to stop. We really need to get to the city," the other boy added.

David felt bad for the two children and decided to help them. He opened his trunk, where he handed them two clean towels from his emergency bag. "Get in. I'll take you to the city," he told them as they wrapped themselves in the towels.

The boys jumped, delighted that someone finally offered to take them. "Thank you, sir. Thank you so much!" they said as they entered the car.

When they got to the city, the boys asked to be dropped off in an apartment building. They waved goodbye and thanked David one last time for his kindness.

They waited for David to drive off before they entered, only to see that he had parked his car two blocks away in an intersection. "He lives nearby," one of the boys pointed out as David entered a house on the street corner.

The following day, David was surprised to hear the doorbell ring while drinking his morning coffee. He was not expecting any guests, so he wondered who it could be.

When he opened the door, he was surprised to see the two boys from the previous day, this time with their mother. "Hi, what a surprise!" he told them. "What are you doing here?"

The boys shared that there was something they wanted to say. They introduced themselves as Peter and Adam, revealing that they had seen David entering his home the day prior, which is why they knew where to find him.

"It won't take long. We just wanted to share something with you," Peter said with a soft smile on his lips.

David was curious about what the kids possibly had to say. He decided to let them inside his house so they could talk comfortably. "Come in, then. Let me give you something to eat while you tell me what you need to say," he said, opening the door wider for them to enter.

When they got to the living room, the boys shared that they were in a hurry to visit their ill grandmother the previous day. "Our mom had been taking care of our grandmother after she was diagnosed with a terminal illness," Adam revealed.

"Yesterday, mom called us up and said granny wasn't doing well and wanted to say goodbye to us... Because of you, we were able to say goodbye," he added tearfully.

"We were so afraid we wouldn't make it in time, especially after the bus broke down and the rain started to pour heavily, but it's as if you were an angel who answered our prayers. You allowed us to see our grandmother one last time. We came here because we wanted to thank you," Peter told David.

David felt sorry for Peter and Adam. He realized that times have changed, and not everybody was willing to help others, especially during times of need. "I'm sorry for your loss, and I appreciate you coming over despite mourning your grandmother's death. Thank you for dropping by," he told them.

"It saddened me to hear that I was the first person to offer to help you yesterday. I always thought it was human nature to help those we can," he shared. "I'm glad I was able to help you and that you were able to say goodbye to your grandmother."

"We are so grateful for your kindness, sir. If there's anything we can ever do to help you, we'd be happy to do it. We've decided to move into our grandmother's apartment, so we'll be closer if you need us," Peter revealed.

In the end, Peter and Adam kept their promise to David. They offered to mow his lawn, clean the yard, and help with household chores, especially since David lived alone.

They saw David as their grandfather, and they grew close to one another. Peter, Adam, and their mom invited David over during special occasions and holidays, and they spent their afternoons talking and eating home-cooked meals together like a family.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Don't turn a blind eye to other people's problems if you can help them. Many people went on with their lives without helping the two boys drenched in the rain. Only David stopped to help them, and this allowed the boys to say goodbye to their grandmother one last time.
  • There are good people in the world willing to help you despite the odds. It's sometimes difficult to see the good in others, especially when you're used to having selfish people around you. However, it is important to remember that there are still good people everywhere. Choose to see the good in every person.
