Son Bans Mom from Attending His Prom Because She Looks Old, She Shows up and Becomes Prom Queen – Story of the Day
A son bans his mother from his prom because he thinks she looks too old and will embarrass him in front of his classmates. Nevertheless, the mom shows up at the prom and shocks everyone by not only winning the "prom queen" title but also doing something unexpected.
Stella Becker was a single mother raising her teenage son Adam after her husband, Edward, left them years ago. She was horrified when she realized she was left alone with her son and would have to manage everything independently.
Stella married Edward shortly after graduating from college, and she never devoted much time to her career. She became a loving wife and mother, focusing solely on her family's needs.
She was heartbroken when Edward suddenly died of a heart attack one day. How could he just leave her like that?

After Edward's death, Stella struggled to return to normalcy. She started applying for jobs, and only after months of being turned down did she obtain one as a clerk at a grocery store.
Her job, in a way, distracted her from Edward's death and gave her the motivation to keep going, but Stella had also let herself go. She didn't care how she looked or whether her clothes were crumpled and worn or if the color looked awful on her.
After all, why should she care? Who would compliment her even if she looked beautiful when Edward was gone? To her, there was no use in getting dressed up and looking beautiful.
But she was wrong, incredibly wrong. She should have done that for herself and Adam...
"So Adam, what are you planning on wearing to the prom?" Stella asked Adam enthusiastically. They were having dinner and Stella thought it would be a good time to talk about his attire for the big day.

"I'm not sure, mom...." Adam responded flatly. "I haven't decided yet."
"Come on, Adam! Are you serious? Why haven't you made up your mind yet? I'm so excited about your prom that I signed up to be a volunteer!"
"What?" Adam was stunned. "Why? Why are you unnecessarily trying to be a part of it?"
"What's wrong with you, Adam?" Stella asked, putting her fork down. "I just happen to have some free time, and I want to help your school with the preparations!"
"Please, mom!" Adam snarled. "Just stay out of it, okay? I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE THERE!!"

"Don't be ridiculous, Adam! I am a volunteer for the event!" Stella retorted. "I HAVE to be there! And I don't have a hundred thousand sons! I only have one son, and what's the big deal if I attend your prom?"
At that point, Adam shoved his chair back and jumped to his feet, throwing his fork on the table. "Because you look FREAKIN' OLD, mom! Do you understand? After dad left, you've just let yourself go! You look too old for your age and I don't appreciate you being there on my special day! You're going to show up there looking old and ragged and just embarrass me!"
Stella felt as if her entire body had gone numb. "Adam..." she mumbled. "Wait, what are you saying?"
Just because someone can carry a load well does not mean it is not heavy.
"Whether you like it or not, mom, that's the truth! So please! Just stay out of my business!!" Adam declared and walked away.
Stella was left in tears, unable to fathom what had just happened.

When D-Day arrived a few days later, Adam dressed in a fine suit and was ready to go to the prom. He didn't have a date, but he had a bunch of friends he'd made plans with. Stella was in her room when he left and he didn't bother to notify her that he was off to the prom.
"Thank God she didn't go to the school!" he thought as he was leaving. "I hope today will be amazing!"
Everyone had gathered in the hall for the celebration, including Adam, who was busy with his friends and their dates, when a voice through the loudspeaker attracted his attention. The voice read a poem over the speaker, and everyone in the audience became quiet. There was pin-drop silence.
"…Every day, she rises from her bed, with the thought of her son in her head….My appearance may be all that matters to you, but never forget the sacrifices I made for you!"
Adam recognized the voice. It was Stella's. She was reciting a poem about how, despite her distress, she had cared for him all these years. She said that she had forgotten herself when his father departed, but she would never ignore him, especially on this day when he expected his mother to look beautiful for him.

With that, Stella appeared in front of everyone, dressed in a lovely gown. When Adam saw her, his jaw dropped to the floor. He couldn't believe it was her! She looked stunning!
"Mom!" he called out as he approached her. "You look amazing! Oh, I'm so sorry about what I said...I'm so sorry!"
Stella smiled at him and took his hand in hers. "While you were wrong in the way you said it, Adam, I now understand that you were right. I should have made an effort for you. I am sorry…."
"You shouldn't be sorry, mom," Adam assured and he wrapped his arms around her. "I AM sorry! All this while, I was just thinking about myself…." Adam realized Stella had been through a lot and that he had raged at her without realizing how difficult things were for her.
Everyone in the hall was emotional at that moment, some dabbing their eyes to keep the tears away. But that wasn't the end of the story.

At the end of the prom, the prom queen, Madison, had a wonderful surprise in store for Stella.
When she was invited on the stage to accept her title, Madison approached Stella and told her, "You are the real prom queen tonight, Mrs. Becker. You deserve the title, not me!"
"Oh no…I can't…." Stella protested, but Madison wouldn't listen. She gave her prom queen sash to Stella and everyone in the room applauded and hooted.
"That's my beautiful mom, everyone!" Adam told himself with tears in his eyes. "THAT'S MY MOM!"
What can we learn from this story?
- Just because someone can carry a load well does not mean it is not heavy. Adam accused Stella of letting herself go without realizing how difficult things had been for her. When he realized his error, he apologized to her.
- Losing a loved one is heartbreaking, but your life deserves a fresh start. While Adam's approach to Stella's appearance was wrong, it made her understand that she needed to give herself a chance for her and Adam's sake.
