Man’s Dog Hurries to Neighbor’s Home Upon Hearing Kids Crying, Next Day Police Come for the Dog — Story of the Day
After hearing the loud cries of his neighbor's children, a man stormed into their house and gasped in horror after they pointed toward a corner. The next day, cops came for his dog and surrounded his house.
Adam Hays was on a day off. The last time he had taken a break was three weeks ago when his beloved dog Sheila met with an accident. This time, Adam wanted to spend time with his paw-mate, who had just recovered.
"Hey, girl! I thought I would lose you. Come here. Come to daddy. Good girl! Good girl! Jump, and here you go," he laughed as Sheila jumped on him for a treat.
Three weeks ago, Adam almost lost Sheila after a car slightly rammed onto her while she was crossing the road. Luckily, the driver pulled the brakes, giving Sheila a narrow escape with minor injuries. She was hospitalized and made a speedy recovery.
A dog person, Adam's heart almost skipped a beat because this dog was his heartbeat. It would've been too painful for him not to have Sheila around.
While Adam was cherishing his best friend's recovery, an incident in the neighborhood gave him a similar heartbreak. He burst into tears when cops knocked on his door to take his beloved dog...

Adam was preparing the best meal for his five-year-old dog on a pleasant, autumn-kissed October morning. "Daddy is on a day off today, and we are going to freak out in our car, alright?" he happily said, tossing boiled steak into Sheila's bowl.
"What is going on here? Why are you kids shouting on top of your voices?" Adam asked the kids. They pointed together toward the farthest corner of their living room.
"I'll be back...Daddy's gonna take a shower!"
"Woof! woof!" Sheila barked, wagging her tail.
Moments later, when Adam came out of his bathroom and called out to Sheila, she did not respond. "Hey, girl! I'm back. Shall we go? Sheila?"
But the dog was nowhere in sight. Adam was sure he had locked the house due to instances of Sheila sneaking out when she was a pup, and the windows were too high for her to jump out of them.
"Where is she?" he mumbled and walked toward his main door to check.

"Hey, girl...what are you doing there?" he shouted after seeing Sheila crouching behind the door, trying to see something through the sliver of light underneath.
"Woof...woof...woof." Adam did not understand why his dog was constantly barking. "What's wrong, Sheila? Why are you barking?"
The dog looked at Adam, wagged her tail, and again barked, looking outside. "Is it a squirrel? No, I'm not letting you catch it. No way!" he laughed, recalling the last time he saved a squirrel from Sheila's grasp.
He stepped away to fetch Sheila's leash, but something bothered him.
"Hush, girl. Wh-what's that noise? I can hear something...." he said. "Sssshhhhh. Did you hear that?"
Adam knew he wasn't imagining things. He walked closer to his main door and listened to the noise again. It was coming from his neighbor's house. Those were loud bangs and cries of children wailing for help.
"Wha-what's wrong with Fredrick's kids?" he muttered as he opened the door. But before he could take a step, Sheila stormed past his legs and sprinted to Fredrick's house.
"Sheila! Wait! What are you doing? Stop scratching their door," Adam shouted and rushed behind her. But by the time he reached there, Sheila was already inside the house, and moments later, an eerie silence followed.

"What is going on here? Why are you kids shouting on top of your voices? Lucy, is everything alright?" Adam asked Fredrick's children. The three kids were frightened of something. They stood in a row, one behind another, near a side table in their living room.
Adam could clearly interpret the fear on their faces. Their teary eyes and messy hair baffled him. He had never seen these chirpy kids so scared of something.
"What's wrong?" he asked them again, and Lucy and her two younger siblings, Mark and Sadie, pointed together toward the farthest corner of their living room.
Adam turned and gasped in horror at seeing his beloved dog Sheila unconscious on the floor in a pool of blood. Beads of sweat ran down his face in fear. "SHEILA? What happened to you?" he yelled and ran to check on her. What he saw made his face drained of color, and he immediately dialed 911.
Moments later, a veterinary ambulance pulled up outside Fredrick's house.
"Sheila!... Wake up!... No, don't leave me! Sheila, wake up, girl!" Adam cried as the nurses scooped the dog and laid her on the stretcher. Beside her was a corpse of a venomous snake which Sheila had bitten and killed to save the children. The reptile had crept into the house through an open window.

In no time, the news spread around the small neighborhood, and people flocked to the hospital to see the brave dog. Adam was restless, and although he was proud of Sheila's bravery, he remained anxious until the vet saw him again.
"Mr. Hays, your dog is out of danger now," the vet said.
It was all Adam wanted to hear. He sighed relief and looked above in tears, thanking the Almighty for saving his beloved Sheila's life.
That evening, he returned home with his dog. His neighbors praised him and thanked Sheila for saving their children's lives.
"I had just gone out for a walk with my wife. Thank goodness your dog saved my kids. I'm forever grateful to Sheila, and I'm glad she's fine now," Fredrick said.
Adam stayed near Sheila the whole night, praying hard for her speedy recovery. They had been sleeping in each other's arms when an air-piercing siren suddenly woke them up the next morning. Adam was curious, and he heard loud bangs on his door before he could check. He opened it and froze at seeing cops outside.
"Mr. Adam Hays?" an officer said.
"Yes, that's me. What is it, officer?"
"Where is your dog?"
"Sheila? Why...? She's sleeping inside."
"How is she now?"
"She's alright, officer. She's resting, but why are you asking all this?"
"Mr. Hays. You have to bring your dog and come with us right now."
"What? But why? What's wrong?" Adam said, sounding nervous.
"You've got 10 minutes, Mr. Hays. Make it quick."

Adam was curious and worried. Moments later, he and Sheila were taken in the patrol car while his neighbors flocked around his house in astonishment.
"What is it, officer? Why are we here at the mayor's office?" Adam curiously asked. "What is happening?"
"You will know in a few minutes, Mr. Hays. Please stay calm and don't let go of your dog. Hold her tight."
With each passing second, Adam's heart began to beat faster. When he and Sheila were finally escorted to the mayor's office, he turned red with shock after seeing journalists and shutterbugs inside.
The mayor, Mr. Jones Harvy, shook Adam's hand and patted him on the shoulder. "You have raised a courageous dog, Mr. Hays. We are really proud of you!" the mayor said. Adam was stunned. Then the mayor leaned down, pinned a medal on Sheila's collar, and posed for photos that made headlines in the local newspaper the next day.
"It's the best day of my life, Mr. Harvy. Thank you!" Adam exclaimed in joy.
"No, Mr. Hays. Please thank your dog for saving those children's lives. I must say...Sheila is such a wonderful, brave dog, and I would like to encourage all families in our town to raise a pet like yours."
The incident changed people's opinion of animals in the neighborhood. The local animal shelter soon became empty as every family adopted a dog after learning of Sheila's brave act.
Adam was elated by the heartwarming twist in his life his dog had brought. From that day on, the kids in his neighborhood often brought lovely treats for Sheila and played with her. The dog was excited to make new friends and always had her best paw forward.
