Grandpa Shelters Stray Dog That Soothes His Sick Grandson, Pulls Out Rolled Paper from Its Collar — Story of the Day
70-year-old Reuben took his sick grandson out of the house to calm him down. He saw a St. Bernard with a collar on him. Little did he know that this encounter would change his life.
Reuben stared at the stains on the hardwood floor under the refrigerator. The leak was no longer unnoticeable.
'I have to fix that. Ronnie's crawling at a faster pace now, and he'll be running around the place soon.'
In no time, Reuben became aware of the other issues around the house. He broke down crying, realizing he won't be able to pay for the repairs. He was a successful lawyer in his prime, but he had lost all his savings recently and struggled to make ends meet.

Reuben did not know how his sunset years would pan out. His eldest son, Jonathan, had abandoned the family after the death of Reuben's wife, Iris. A year later, his daughter Sara was diagnosed with cancer, and Sara's husband could not handle it and abandoned her.
Weeks after her husband left her, Sara realized she was pregnant and moved in with her father. Reuben took care of Sara during her pregnancy and used up all his savings for her treatment. Unfortunately, Sara succumbed to cancer a few months after giving birth to Ronnie.
The universe has a way of taking care of the kind-hearted.
Ronnie was the only reason Reuben had any will to live, and he was Reuben's hope. But things were not looking good. Ronnie had epilepsy and needed to be monitored at all times.
Ronnie's epileptic episodes had gotten worse. It made him very uneasy, and so he cried a lot. He would cry a lot until he fell asleep.

Before Reuben could wipe off his tears, Ronnie woke up again, crying. Reuben decided to take him outside the house to soothe him.
'Maybe a change in environment could help,' he thought.
Ronnie would get distracted and look at the trees, the sky, and the birds for a bit. But it did not seem to calm him down. Reuben was out of ideas.
Suddenly, Reuben noticed a big furry St. Bernard approaching them. He was scared that the dog would scare Ronnie, or, even worse, cause an injury to him. But he noticed a collar on the dog, which relaxed him slightly.
'Looks like he's someone's pet and won't harm humans.'
Still, Reuben tried to keep the dog away from Ronnie and looked around for his owners, and he saw no one around. The dog was trying to get closer to Ronnie, and Reuben was panicking and looking intently.

Suddenly, Reuben noticed that Ronnie had stopped crying. He looked down and saw the dog licking Ronnie's hand. Ronnie was smiling, excited to see the dog.
Reuben was pleasantly surprised. He waited some more time to see if the dog's owners were around, believing that the dog was also abandoned. Then he decided to take him home.
At home, Ronnie seemed to have transformed completely. He played with the dog throughout the day, and Reuben noticed a rolled-up paper attached to the dog's collar.
He pulled it out and read the note:
Whoever is reading this, please take care of my Jimmy.
I'm Melissa Underwood. I lived at 53 Winston Street before I was forced to stay in the nursing home downtown. Jimmy was my only friend, and he is a Godsend. I hope you can give my Jimmy a home. Thanks."
Reuben was shocked to read the note and was curious about Melissa's story. He walked down to the nursing home to meet her with Ronnie and Jimmy.

Melissa was thrilled to see Jimmy. She thanked Reuben for taking care of him. He explained how Jimmy was indeed a Godsend for him and Ronnie. But Reuben was more interested in Melissa's story.
Melissa explained that she lost her son a year back. He had separated from his wife a long time ago. But her daughter-in-law showed up only a few months ago and put the house on sale without informing her. She took the keys to the house and put Melissa in the nursing home.
Reuben was outraged. He knew the pain of abandonment, and as a former lawyer, he knew that the law was on Melissa's side. He decided to help Melissa sue her daughter-in-law. He also offered her to live with him instead of in the nursing home.

The trial went on for months, but it was worth it.
During the trial, it was revealed that Melissa's daughter-in-law was having an affair with another man in the city while she was married. That man turned out to be Reuben's eldest son, Jonathan, who had lost all his money due to his gambling addiction. He was desperate for money and suggested Melissa's daughter-in-law sell the house.
Melissa won the case, and her daughter-in-law was arrested for forgery and fraud. The court opened a case against Jonathan, too. Melissa got the house and a lot of money from punitive damages.

Reuben, Melissa, Ronnie, and Jimmy lived together even after the trial, and they had the means to treat Ronnie with the best medical care. They had two houses now, with no leaking refrigerators. And most importantly, they had a loving and caring family.
