'Wonderful' Dad of 2 Found Dead in River after GPS Led to Broken Bridge on His Way Home
When a North Carolina father of two was hoping to reach home on time while returning from his daughter's birthday party, he took a left turn, unaware that the road would lead to death.
Moving to a new city is often accompanied by multiple experiences like making friends and exploring places. Some people feel excited about starting their lives from scratch in a different city, while others feel anxious thinking about it.
The man in today's story also decided to move with his family, but he wasn't afraid of the new challenges. He was all set to do everything possible to give his daughters and wife the best life, but fate had other plans.
A Happy Family
Philip John Paxson served in the Navy from 1993 to 1997 and graduated from the University of South Florida in 2001. He married Alicia Paxson, which marked the beginning of a beautiful life for him.
The couple had two daughters, Amelia and Juliet, and tried to give their girls the best life. Friends and family knew the Paxsons as a happy family of four who loved going on adventures like camping and boating.
After spending more than two decades in Tampa Bay, Florida, the Paxsons decided to move to Hickory, North Carolina. Moving to a new city meant Philip had to find a new job and make new friends, but he wasn't afraid.
The Tragedy
The family lived happily until an unexpected incident turned their lives upside down. It happened on the night of their oldest daughter's birthday celebration on September 30, 2022.
What was supposed to be a joyful day turned into a nightmare for Alicia and her daughters after Philip met an accident. Since he probably wasn't sure about directions in the new city, he used his GPS to get back home.
While following the GPS instructions, as many people do, Philip took a left turn that led to a broken bridge. Unaware of the bridge's condition, Philip drove further and eventually landed in a creek.
No Warning
Unfortunately, the father of two passed away after his vehicle fell into the water, leaving his family devastated. First responders arrived at the accident site the following day, and the authorities concluded that the accident happened after 11 p.m.
"The bridge had been destroyed [nine] years ago and never repaired," Linda McPhee Koenig, Philip's mother-in-law, said. She revealed that there were no "barriers or warning signs" which could have prevented Philip's untimely demise. She added:
"It was a totally preventable accident."
The Devastated Family
"Phil did not deserve to die like that, and it is a horrible thing to go through. His children now have no father," Kayla Bubar, Philip's sister-in-law, said. She also revealed that the damaged bridge where he passed away was called the "bridge to nowhere."
Philip's devastated family wants to raise awareness about the bridge so the authorities will do something to fix it. They want to find out who is responsible for Philip's death. Meanwhile, a Catawba County official said:
"The road where this occurred is private property. In North Carolina, counties do not have the authority to maintain roads (public or private)."
The Obituary
It was difficult for Philip's family to believe that he had suddenly passed away. They penned a heartfelt obituary for the "larger than life" 47-year-old father. The obituary read:
"He had the best sense of humor, could connect with anyone, and make you feel like you were the most important person in the room."
"
, but mostly that proud smile he would have when talking about Alicia, Amelia, and Juliet," the family
. Alicia and her daughters had never imagined losing Philip so soon.
A makeshift memorial was set up at the accident site, where people left flowers and prayed for Philip. At the same time, his family hoped his death would raise awareness about such "avoidable tragedies."
Our thoughts and prayers are with Philip's family and friends as they mourn his death. We hope his soul rests in peace and his family gets the strength to deal with the pain of losing him.
