Sheryl Crow Has Never Been Married – She Once Spoke about Why
Three men have nearly become Sheryl Crow's husbands. The nine-time Grammy-award-winner has had multiple high-profile relationships over the years and was engaged three times. However, Crow said she "thanked God" that she never got married.
Crow began her career as a backup singer for the late Michael Jackson and kickstarted her career in Rock and Roll and Country music in the 1990s. She released her debut album in 1993 and has become a well-known singer and songwriter.
While her successful career has won her many accolades, her love life also has been the center of attention. After numerous high-profile relationships and three engagements, Crow reflected on her life at 60 and said she was grateful she never said "I do."
Why Sheryl Crow Never Got Married
Earlier this year, Howard Stern interviewed Crow to promote her documentary, "Sheryl." She was reluctant about the project but had a change of heart. She said she spent years being "really private" and decided it was time to tell her story.
During her appearance on "The Howard Stern Show," Crow opened up about her love life and joked that she was "hot. Even at 60." She revealed that she never made it down the aisle because she dated men who never wanted to get married. Looking back on her life, Crow was grateful for how things panned out. She said:
"So, in a weird way, I'm grateful. And you think you're gonna be like, 'Oh, [expletive] that guy,' or whatever, but by the time you get to that point, you've moved on, and you don't really care anymore."
During an interview with Glamour in 2008, Crow expressed the same sentiment about dating men who were not too keen on the idea of marriage. She said it was a "large part" of her single woman status. Often, the same issue would arise when it came to having children.
Later in life, she realized she perhaps did not want to get married, but what she wanted was to have a family. During her Glamour interview, Crow said many women thought getting a ring would solidify their relationships, which was not always the case.
She admitted to growing up with the idea that she needed a man and needed to get married. But as she got older, Crow said she became comfortable with not having a "conventional family" like her parents. She added:
"The story I was telling myself limited what I thought I could have."
Sheryl Crow Was Engaged Three Times
One of Crow's three engagements was with famous cyclist Lance Armstrong. She did not reveal the details of her other engagements but reminisced about her first on "The Howard Stern Show."
The first time Crow got engaged, she was in a religious cover band called Cashmere. She fell in love with one of her bandmates, who allegedly told her he could not marry her unless she dedicated her career to singing religious music.
So she packed her bags and jetted to Los Angeles. When Stern asked Crow if she was still in contact with him, she said he sent her a "nice" note after her cancer diagnosis. She further said:
"Everybody eventually grows up and figures out who they are. I give people a lot of leeway if they evolve."
In 2019, Crow spoke about her three engagements while performing at the 44th Annual Gracie Awards in California and said she was having a "rockin' great time, not getting married." She also noted that she found the event inspiring to be in a room filled with accomplished women.
Sheryl Crow's Dating History
In the late 1990s, Crow dated famous musician Eric Clapton. He was seventeen years older than her, and their relationship was brief. Rumor had it that her hit song "My Favorite Mistake" was about Clapton. In 1999, she dated actor Owen Wilson for two years after they met on the set of "The Minus Man," Crow's first acting job.
They attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2000, and Crow dedicated the song "Safe and Sound" to him. In 2003, Crow began dating Josh Charles. Their relationship only lasted a few months, and a source close to Crow said:
"She's looking for The Guy, and he wasn't it."
In 2006, Crow was rumored to have dated Teri Hatcher and Ryan Seacrest. She was romantically linked to Hank Azaria that same year when they were spotted grabbing dinner. However, Patricia Arquette was present that night as well.
In 2008, Crow dated film producer Steve Bing after allegedly being introduced by Jennifer Aniston. And although a source said Crow and Bing had more in common than expected, their relationship ended. In 2011, Crow dated her longtime friend, Doyle Bramhall II. It is unclear when they broke up, but Crow was single by 2014.
Her most famous partner was Armstrong; they met at a charity event in 2003 before he popped the question two years later. A year after their engagement, they broke things off, and days after that, Crow announced her cancer diagnosis.
Crow debunked all myths that she and Armstrong broke up because of her health and revealed they decided to go their separate ways because he did not want children. Armstrong had three with his previous wife. However, she did want children, and Crow made her motherhood dreams come true.
Sherly Crow adopted her two sons, Wyatt, in 2007 and Levi, in 2010. She said her experience of motherhood changed everything; her children were the first thing Crow thought of in the morning and the last thing when she went to bed.
Although she was single at the time of writing, Crow said she made a pact to herself that she would introduce her next love interest to her children as a friend first. She did not want them to wake up one day and find someone in the house or feel abandoned if the relationship did not work out.
