Broken Mom Finds Daughter, 5, Dead at Home – They Were Preparing for Halloween & Now Have to Plan a Funeral
A five-year-old girl was full of life and joy. She was counting down the days to Halloween and had already prepared her Supergirl costume, unaware she wouldn't have a chance to wear it.
Skyé-Bleu Evans-Cowley was the life of the party, and she brought positivity and light wherever she went. Her mother, Lakayla Evans, described her as an old soul and someone who always managed to lift her spirits.
The most important thing in Skyé-Bleu's world was her mom. The two were inseparable, and like many mother-daughter duos, they loved having fun together. The pair never imagined their time for making memories would be cut short.
The Little Girl Couldn't Wait for Halloween
The sassy kindergartner enjoyed everything about going to school, from reading books to eating lunch. Her energetic nature was unmissable, and she was excited about October 31, 2022.
Halloween was approaching, and she couldn't wait to go trick-or-treating. Skyé-Bleu had already selected her costume for the well-loved occasion, and she was eager to go around her neighborhood as Supergirl. But it was not meant to be.
A Mother's Worst Nightmare
While other families geared their kids for the upcoming festivities, Lakayla's world came to a standstill on October 17. It started like any other Monday, but the mother's worst nightmare was about to become a reality.
While Skyé-Bleu was in her Green Bay, Wisconsin home, violence took over unexpectedly and unfairly. Shortly before 5 p.m., first responders received a distressing call about an incident involving a five-year-old.
She was allegedly wounded at an apartment on the 1600-block of Amy Street. They arrived on the scene and tried their best to save her life, rushing the precious child to the hospital.
A Bright Light Lost Too Soon
Tragically, Skyé-Bleu didn't make it. She died because of the shooting incident, and her family was shattered. The little girl's mom didn't know how to continue.
She expressed: "My baby, my strength, my strength [is] gone. She was my fight. She was my everything, like, what I got to fight [for]?" Skyé-Bleu's hopes and dreams were stolen instantly, and the world lost a bright light.
Skyé-Bleu's mom explained that she knew her daughter was with her whenever she saw the sun shining.
With a broken heart, Lakayla said she would never hear her daughter say these words again, "Mommy, I love you more than the whole wide world. You [are] my best buddy."
They Would Never See Her Smile Again
The beloved child's aunt, Lamika Evans, was equally shattered by the shocking event and had only fond memories of her niece. She shared that Skyé-Bleu always wore a "silly smile."
Whenever Lamika asked her why she was smiling, the little girl replied: "I don't know, [because] I'm happy, [because] I'm happy." Now they would never have the chance to see that special smile and feel her happiness again.
She Was Still with Them
The community was devastated following the ordeal. They left candles, stuffed toys, and balloons outside her home. The makeshift memorial served as a reminder of the precious life lost senselessly.
Skyé-Bleu's mom explained that she knew her daughter was with her whenever she saw the sun shining. She explained:
"She’s still with us, [in] spirit. She’s just not here physically."
Support for the Grieving Family
A GoFundMe page was created to assist the grieving family as they navigate this painful time. A post on their page stated:
"She was [robbed] of her childhood and life. She will not get a chance to grow up with the rest of her cousins. She won't [have] an opportunity to see the first grade, prom, or high school ..."
The mother desperately wants justice for her baby girl, and police are working tirelessly to apprehend the guilty parties. Lakayla said: "I want justice for my baby. [I've] got questions. [I've] got more questions than answers."
The Green Bay police are still investigating the incident at the time of this writing and are searching for a suspect allegedly involved in the crime.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Jordan Leavy-Carter can contact the Green Bay Police Department at (920) 448-3200 or their local Crime Stoppers.
May God grant the family the strength to continue. Losing a loved one is never easy—even more so when a young and innocent child is taken so violently. We send our condolences and heartfelt prayers to Lakayla. RIP, little angel.
