56-Year-Old Utah Grandma Gives Birth to Her Son & His Wife’s Baby: ‘We Are Feeling So Blessed'
After a woman discovered she and her husband couldn't have more babies, her mother-in-law offered to become a surrogate. At first, they thought it wasn't possible, but months later, the 56-year-old woman gave birth to her grandchild.
Cambria and Jeff Hauck from St. George, Utah, always knew they wanted more than four children. The couple first met when Cambria was in her last year of high school.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a regular part of their lives while growing up, and the couple grew closer after becoming friends. On December 12, 2012, Cambria and Jeff married and started a new chapter in their lives.
They Knew They Wanted Babies
Since Jeff was a teenager, he was fascinated with the concept of being a father and wanted to experience the warmth of this relationship one day. When he married Cambria, he knew it was time. Cambria said:
"We always had in our mind that we wanted four to six."
"Whatever the Lord would bless us with is what we would always say," she revealed. However, things took a different turn when Cambria and Jeff tried for a baby. Soon after tying the knot, they realized Cambria had infertility issues.
It Took Them Four Years
The couple got in touch with a specialist, and Cambria started her fertility treatments, hoping she would conceive soon. She and Jeff had no idea it would take them four years to welcome their first set of twins into this world.
Jeff said he didn't feel awkward being in the labor room with his mother.
Jeff and Cambria were delighted to have their twin girls, Vera and Ayva, but had no idea of the challenges they were yet to face. In 2021, they welcomed another set of twins, Diesel and Luca, but their birth was accompanied by a problem no one saw coming.
An Unforeseen Incident
Hours after giving birth to her twin boys, Cambria was told that she needed to undergo a hysterectomy, a surgical procedure that wouldn't allow her to have more babies.
Despite wishing to have more babies, Cambria and Jeff allowed the doctors to perform the surgical procedure. With it, their hopes of having more children died. Cambria recalled:
"That was a hard choice for us."
The Grandmother's Generous Offer
When the couple went for IVF before having their twin girls, they preserved seven fertilized embryos, which meant the couple still had viable embryos they could use after Cambria's hysterectomy, should they decide to go the surrogacy route.
After some time, Jeff's mother, Nancy Hauck, made a generous offer to her son and daughter-in-law. She told them she could be a surrogate mother for their child. At first, the couple thought it was impossible because Nancy was already 56. However, Nancy thought otherwise. "I could just feel this calling to offer to carry for them," she recalled.
A few weeks later, Nancy went to the clinic with Jeff and Cambria to discuss her options with their fertility specialist, unaware of the surprise waiting for the family.
She Could Become a Mother
After doctors ran multiple tests on Nancy, they told the Haucks that Nancy could serve as a surrogate mother and that older women can become mothers as long as they are healthy.
Jeff and Cambria were delighted to know that Nancy could carry their baby, but they didn't have funds for the procedure. Fortunately, Jeff soon got a new job, while Cambria earned money through social media gigs.
On February 17, 2022, the doctors implanted one of Jeff and Cambria's embryos into Nancy's body. Six days later, the family celebrated Nancy's positive pregnancy test result.
Pregnant After Decades
While Nancy was happy to become a surrogate mother for her son and daughter-in-law, the pregnancy unfolded a set of worries for her. She confessed:
"My greatest fear was that I would lose the baby and feel that I had taken the chance for that baby's life because of my age."
Nancy also requested her daughter-in-law to keep the news of her pregnancy secret on social media until she was six months pregnant.
It's a Girl
Cambria said she always accompanied her mother-in-law to the pre-natal check-up appointments. She felt grateful that Nancy volunteered to carry her baby, otherwise, she and Jeff wouldn't be able to welcome their fifth child.
On November 2, 2022, Nancy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl surrounded by her family. Jeff said he didn't feel awkward being in the labor room with his mother. Instead, he felt lucky to witness his mother giving birth to his daughter. Nancy said:
"Everything went perfectly, and we are feeling so blessed to have her in our family."
"My Name Is Hannah"
The couple named their daughter Hannah and shared an interesting incident that inspired the name. It occurred the day Nancy got her positive pregnancy test. Nancy told them that she heard a voice say, "My name is Hannah."
At that point, Nancy knew she would have a baby girl and told Jeff and Cambria she wanted to name her Hannah. The couple agreed and considered it a tribute to the baby's grandmother.
When it was time to go home, Nancy confessed she felt sad when Cambria and Jeff took Hannah with them, but she decided to use this experience productively. She planned to write a book about her feelings during her three weeks off from work.
