Long before he became one of Hollywood's most recognizable action stars, Chuck Norris was a young Air Force serviceman whose life took an unexpected turn during his time in California.

The actor had enlisted in the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduating from high school in 1958. He trained as an air policeman, now known as Air Force Security Forces, with hopes of eventually working in law enforcement.

During a deployment to Osan Air Base in South Korea, he discovered Tang Soo Do, the Korean martial art that laid the foundation for the career that would eventually make him an international star.

By the early 1960s, however, the actor was still serving in the military and married to his childhood sweetheart, Dianne Holechek. The couple had tied the knot in 1958 when he was 18, and she was 17.

They later welcomed two sons together, Mike Norris in 1962 and Eric Norris in 1965. However, between those births, the Hollywood star had a brief affair while stationed in Riverside, California, shortly before leaving the Air Force.

It was only years later, after reading newspaper reports that Chuck had divorced, that Dina decided the time was right to reach out.

In his 2004 memoir, "Against All Odds: My Story," Chuck explained that his brother had introduced him to two sisters, Joyce and Johanna, during a night out at a club. Chuck spent time with Johanna, but admitted he never told her he was married.

Their relationship was brief and, according to his memoir, they were intimate only once before he ended things because he knew continuing the romance was wrong. But unknown to him, she became pregnant.

Their daughter, Dianna DeCioli, known throughout her life as Dina, was born after that encounter. Johanna later married another man before Dina was born, leading her daughter to believe for years that her stepfather was her biological father.

It was not until Dina was 16 that her mother revealed the truth, explaining that Chuck was her real father. Still, even after learning his identity, Dina chose not to contact him.

Respecting her mother's wishes, she stayed out of his life because he was married and raising a family of his own. It was only years later, after reading newspaper reports that Chuck had divorced, that Dina decided the time was right to reach out.

With the encouragement of her husband, Damien DeCioli, she wrote the action star a letter explaining who she was and expressing a desire to meet. Chuck later recalled opening the unexpected letter:

"I was going through my mail at home, and I see this letter and I open it up. It's from Dina...and she says, 'I'm your daughter from a past experience,' and she said, 'I found out you were my father when I was 16, but my mother said you were married and we shouldn't interfere with your family.'"

The revelation left him stunned, and in his memoir, he wrote that he initially asked his mother to meet Dina before he did. After that meeting, his mother called and urged him to come over immediately. Unsure what to expect, the actor brought his brother with him for support.

At his mother's home, every doubt disappeared the moment Chuck walked into the room. "I walked into the living room and nearly had my breath knocked out of me," he wrote.

"There, standing before me, was a beautiful young lady. I was stunned, but the moment I saw her, I knew. I didn't need DNA or blood tests; there was no doubt in my mind that she was my daughter," he continued.

Chuck also recalled that they embraced and immediately broke down in tears, writing, "At that moment it was as if I had known her all of her life." The emotional reunion marked the beginning of a close relationship rather than the end of an unanswered question.

Although an overseas work commitment briefly interrupted their first visit, Chuck and Dina stayed in contact and later reunited. In his memoir, he explained that Dina, Damien, and their three children eventually became "a blessed part of my life."

He also revealed that he apologized to Johanna for the pain his actions had caused decades earlier, writing that he asked for her forgiveness during one of their conversations. Looking back on the circumstances surrounding Dina's birth, Chuck never tried to excuse his actions.

Instead, he reflected on the experience through the lens of his Christian faith, acknowledging that the affair had been wrong while emphasizing that his daughter should never bear the burden of those choices. He wrote:

"Certainly, I know now that God does not condone premarital or extramarital sexual relationships. But I've also discovered that there is no such thing as an 'illegitimate child.' Every baby is legitimate in God's eyes. [...] I am blessed to have her [Dina] as my daughter."
