One phone call from Chuck Norris turned a broke, barely-English-speaking teenager from Belgium into a future action star, and the man who received it never forgot it.

Chuck Norris died on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 86. The man who posted the most personal tribute of the week didn't just lose an icon. He lost the person who had believed in him when not many people did.

Their story starts in the early days of one man's desperate attempt to crack Hollywood. It winds through a chance introduction, a punishing training partnership, and a favor that launched a career — and ends, for now, with a goodbye that brought 40 years full circle.

The Man Behind the Tribute

The tribute came from Jean-Claude Van Damme. Long before he became "The Muscles from Brussels," he was a teenager navigating a new country with almost no English and a growing sense that his Hollywood dream was slipping away.

The turning point came through Bob Wall, the martial arts veteran best known for playing villains in "Enter the Dragon."

Wall watched Van Damme move and was so impressed that he picked up the phone and called Chuck Norris, telling him the young Belgian was someone worth meeting. The reason, as Van Damme later recalled, was that Wall had simply never seen legs like his.

Two Hours Each Way, and a Car for a Bed

Norris agreed to train with him, and Van Damme threw himself into those sessions completely.

He revealed in a 2023 interview, "I would travel for two hours to train with him" — and on nights when he feared the commute might make him late, he slept in his car outside Norris's house rather than risk missing a single session.

The sparring was just as demanding as the commute. Some partners, Van Damme recalled, were outright "wackos." Others were world champions, including Joe Jackson. He was being forged, session by session, into someone the industry would eventually have to take seriously.

The Break That Started It All

That connection led directly to Van Damme's first significant film role. Norris brought him on board for the 1984 action movie "Missing in Action," giving him his first real foothold in Hollywood.

That role cracked open a door that led, eventually, to "Bloodsport," the film that turned Van Damme into a global star. The man who had once slept in a driveway to prove his dedication had, in the end, been handed the future he came for.

The Farewell

Over 40 years later, Van Damme marked Norris's passing with an Instagram post that was quiet, personal, and final. Alongside a collection of photos spanning their friendship, he wrote:

"Deepest condolences on the passing of my friend, Chuck Norris. We knew each other from my early days, and I always respected the man he was. My heart and prayers are with his family. He will never be forgotten."

He closed with a praying hands emoji and a broken heart.

The post said everything about who Norris was away from the cameras — the kind of man who took a chance on a foreign kid with no connections, no language, and nothing but ability, and turned that chance into a career. That same quality, it turns out, ran through every corner of his life.

Norris was more than an action icon. Behind the gates of his Texas ranch, he was a devoted husband, a mentor, a philanthropist, and a man whose loyalty to the people in his life left a mark that outlasted the films.

Aside from his career, Norris was a family man at home. He was married to Gena O'Kelley. Norris and O'Kelley stayed in California before they moved to Texas. The California residence was situated in the Tarzana district of Los Angeles. Norris's estate spanned over 2.2 acres and boasted a primary residence covering just over 5,000 square feet.

A lifelong fitness enthusiast, Norris made sure his ranch had a gym to match his dedication. The spacious facility was equipped with state-of-the-art machines — from cardio equipment to weightlifting apparatus — covering every aspect of a serious workout routine.

With high ceilings and plenty of room to move, the gym reflected the same discipline that defined Norris both on screen and off.

Norris and his wife shared a tight bond that has seen them through the years they have been together. During the Valentine’s period in 2024, Norris reflected on his journey of love, acknowledging the trials and errors he experienced in his earlier relationships. However, at the age of 58, he found his true love while filming "Walker, Texas Ranger."

At that time, Norris was leading a single life, despite the success of his career. Even with his professional achievements, he felt a sense of emptiness. This period of introspection led Norris to realize a profound lesson. He understood that dedicating one's life solely to the pursuit of wealth creates a void in the heart and soul. A trap into which he had fallen.

Norris' friend, named Larry Morales, realized that Norris seemingly had everything but felt empty inside. Larry introduced Norris to a woman he believed could fill the void in his life. Coincidentally, she had a modeling assignment in Dallas, setting the stage for their eventual meeting.

One evening, Norris was enjoying dinner at a sushi restaurant with approximately twelve friends, accompanied by a date. In the midst of their meal, Morales made an entrance with a young lady in tow.

Morales took the opportunity to introduce her to everyone present, but Norris, deeply engrossed in conversation with his date, remained oblivious to the newcomer until Morales specifically called his name, signaling his desire for Norris to meet O’Kelley.

Turning his attention to O’Kelley for the first time, Norris was captivated by her presence. To him, she seemed like an angel gazing directly into his eyes. His greeting stumbled out in a mixture of surprise and admiration, "Oh ... er ... hi! Nice to meet you." Regrettably, Norris's unexpected interaction with O’Kelley caused his date to express displeasure and promptly leave.

After the meal, Morales graciously accompanied O’Kelley back to her hotel. The following morning, Norris and O’Kelley enjoyed breakfast together, during which she extended an invitation for him to attend her fashion show, where she would be modeling wedding gowns.

At the event, a humorous mishap occurred when the train of one particular gown became entangled with a potted plant, resulting in a moment of embarrassment for O’Kelley. Seizing the opportunity to lighten the mood, Norris playfully quipped, "I was thinking about buying that potted plant!"

The day after the fashion show, Norris excitedly shared the details of his encounter with O’Kelley and her modeling escapades with his mother.

Intrigued by the possibility of romance blossoming, his mother couldn't resist probing, "Is that giving you any ideas about marriage?" To which Norris staunchly responded, "Nope, I'm never getting married again!" Little did he know that fate had other plans in store.

On November 28, 1998, Norris and O’Kelley exchanged vows, marking the beginning of their journey together as husband and wife. Nearly 26 years later, their marriage stands as a testament to love, perseverance, and the unexpected twists of destiny.

Norris now advises partnered people to pray together. He added that they should stay smart when dating and look beyond just appearances to find out what the other person is really like inside. He urges people not to give up on their values while looking for someone special. Instead, they should make sure the person they partner with believes in the same important things as they do.

Norris also revealed the reason he perseveres and works doubly hard to stay in good shape. He disclosed that it is because O’Kelley wants to celebrate their 50th Golden Anniversary together. "I'll be 108 years old, but I intend to be there!" he shared.

The actor called O'Kelley his best friend, the love of his life, and the instrument of his spiritual renewal as a Christian. Norris feels blessed to have O’Kelley as his wife. "She is my heart," he said. On Valentine's Day, Norris expressed his love to O’Kelley, stating that every day is golden with her by his side.

Norris, who adores his wife, also takes her on date nights. In 2017, he shared gorgeous pictures of him and O'Kelley on a delightful date night. The two ate at The House of Prime Rib in San Francisco, known for its exquisite prime rib dishes.

Norris gushed about the place's exceptional food and service, which gave him and his wife a memorable dining experience. Following their indulgent meal, Norris and O'Kelley leisurely strolled through the charming streets of San Francisco, basking in each other's company.

Norris' love for his wife has seen him fight for her health and take good care of her. In 2017, Norris filed a lawsuit in California alleging that a chemical used in MRI imaging scans had caused harm to his wife.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, claims that gadolinium injected into O'Kelley to enhance MRI clarity has left her experiencing weakness, fatigue, pain, and a burning sensation. Gadolinium, a metal found in contrast agents used in MRIs, has been shown to be retained by organs like the brain and bones.

O'Kelley narrated that gadolinium caused her to feel like she was dying, with Norris reiterating that he "saw death in her eyes." The actor was afraid he would lose his wife so he decided that he had to do something about gadolinium.

The effects of gadolinium on O'Kelley started when she had three MRIs in one week to evaluate her rheumatoid arthritis. The MRIs led to gadolinium remaining in O'Kelley's body and triggering a series of mysterious health issues that almost killed her. O'Kelley said she experienced horrible brain damage, memory loss, and muscle wasting.

O'Kelley also felt like her body was filled with acid and she was burning on the inside like someone who was on fire. After testing negative for cancer and other health issues, O'Kelley went online and landed on a gadolinium article, which pinpointed her symptoms as an effect of the metal.

Norris ended up filing this lawsuit, which accused multiple manufacturers of gadolinium contrast agents of being aware of the associated risks but failing to adequately warn consumers.

Seeking damages exceeding $10 million, the lawsuit asserts that the Norris family has incurred substantial medical expenses, totaling millions of dollars, for O'Kelley's treatment.

Chuck Norris and O'Kelley survived this health and legal crisis and a few years later they celebrated on Facebook their 22nd wedding anniversary. Now, the couple, who have been in a union for 26 years continue treasuring each other.

When O'Kelley was sick, Norris gave up his film career to be with his wife. He noted, "My whole life is focused on keeping her as well as I could possibly can." O'Kelley had to get regular stem cell treatments in China to feel better.

In sickness and in health, Norris treasured his wife with an unwavering devotion that transcends time. The actor never ceased to proclaim his love for O'Kelley.
