'The Sopranos' Star Vincent Pastore Had Plans in the Works and Celebrated His 80th Birthday Just Weeks Before His Passing – What His Friend Had to Say

Behind the tough-guy roles was a deeply generous man whose sudden death has left those closest to him struggling to make sense of a goodbye no one saw coming.

Vincent Pastore's death brought a remarkable career to a sudden close. Yet the days leading up to his passing painted a very different picture, one filled with celebration, a final public appearance, and plans that were still taking shape.

The Bronx-born actor, best known for playing Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on "The Sopranos," was found dead inside his Bronx home on Saturday, August 1, 2026. He was 80.

Pastore was discovered by his longtime friend Stephen Villano, who described himself as the actor's "right-hand man." Villano said Pastore apparently died in his sleep. The beloved star's passing marked the end of an unusual Hollywood journey that did not begin until he was already in his 40s.

Pastore spent approximately two decades running and owning bars and nightclubs before turning seriously toward acting at 42. By the end of his career, he had accumulated nearly 200 film and television credits, frequently playing Italian American tough guys.

His early film appearances included "GoodFellas" in 1990 and "Carlito's Way" in 1993. He later appeared in "The Jerky Boys," HBO's "Gotti," "The Hurricane," "Made," "Revolver," and "The Family."

However, it was "The Sopranos" that made Pastore instantly recognizable. After auditioning for David Chase's HBO drama in 1998, Pastore landed the role of Salvatore Bonpensiero. The character, who had not yet acquired his famous nickname when Pastore was hired, became one of the show's most memorable figures.

Sal eventually agreed to become an FBI informant after facing the possibility of life in prison. His betrayal was uncovered, and Tony Soprano, Paulie Gualtieri, and Silvio Dante killed him aboard a boat during the Season 2 finale, "Funhouse."

Pastore appeared in 21 of the show's first 26 episodes. His popularity also brought him back for four later appearances in dreams and flashbacks before the series concluded in 2007.

"Vinny had an unbelievable sweetness to him," Chase said in a statement following the actor's death. He recalled how graciously Pastore accepted the news that his character was being written out and praised the warmth he brought to the set.

Pastore continued building an extensive résumé after leaving the hit show. His television credits ranged from "Law & Order" and "The Practice" to "Everybody Hates Chris," "Blue Bloods," "The Neighborhood," "Gravesend," "One Life to Live," and "General Hospital." He remained active in recent years and appeared in the 2023 Neil Bogart biopic "Spinning Gold."

He also embraced reality television, briefly competing on "Dancing with the Stars," appearing on "Celebrity Apprentice," and presenting a product called the "Broccoli Wad" on "Shark Tank."

His interests stretched into music, podcasting, food, and theater. He launched his own tomato sauce, performed in a rock band, hosted "Fuhgeddaboudit With Vinny Pastore," and toured with Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa in "Talking Sopranos."

Pastore also performed on Broadway. He played Amos Hart in the 2007-08 revival of "Chicago" and mob boss Nick Valenti in the 2014 production of "Bullets Over Broadway."

Vincent Pastore Had Been Celebrating, Working, and Looking Ahead

Only weeks before his passing, Pastore celebrated his milestone 80th birthday with Villano and other people close to him. During the occasion, the actor enjoyed a customized birthday cake, laughing and blowing out the candles after those around him sang "Happy Birthday."

Of Pastore's demise, Villano, who had known the actor for nearly three decades, said, "This is totally shocking." The two had last spoken on the Thursday before Pastore was found.

Pastore lived alone, but Villano insisted there had been no warning that anything was seriously wrong, and police sources said he died of natural causes. "He was totally healthy. He was fine. He just went for his yearly physical," Villano revealed.

According to Villano, the actor had not been retreating from work or preparing to slow down either. Pastore "had a lot planned," including performances with his old-rock group, the Gangster Squad, with whom he sang and played the tambourine.

The "Revolver" actor's schedule was also still expected to include new television work, premieres, and musical appearances.

Additionally, Pastore's agent, Bob McGowan, had also been trying to reach him about a possible new acting opportunity around the time of his death.

Villano had been beside Pastore throughout countless professional and personal moments. "I did everything with Vinny. I drove him to places. I took him to his doctor appointment, I sat with him on shows. I traveled with him," he said. "He was a good man. I will miss him a lot," Villano added while fighting back tears.

Pastore's Final Red Carpet Reflected a Lasting 'Sopranos' Friendship

One of Pastore's final public appearances also showed how closely connected he remained to his "Sopranos" family just over two years ago. On June 8, 2024, he attended the premiere of "Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple" during the Tribeca Festival at New York City's BMCC Theater. Pastore stepped onto the red carpet to support his longtime friend and former Co-Star Steven Van Zandt.

The two men shared a playful moment for photographers, with Van Zandt wrapping an arm around Pastore. The appearance captured Pastore smiling alongside someone with whom he had shared one of television's defining dramas.

Villano said Pastore remained close to numerous members of "The Sopranos" cast, including Van Zandt, Schirripa, Michael Imperioli, and Vince Curatola. "They were a family," he said.

Pastore was grateful for the series and understood that it had served as his "career launching pad." Still, Villano stressed that the actor should never be confused with the intimidating characters that made him famous.

"He said, 'I'm an actor. I play a character.' So people would think that this is the man, but that wasn't the man," Villano explained.

Villano Said Pastore's Real Character Was Defined by Generosity

Behind the mobster image was someone Villano described as kind, caring, charitable, and deeply involved in his community.

Pastore supported veterans in the Bronx, members of the United States military, the NYPD, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Villano also said the actor contributed to events benefiting police widows and orphans.

As a prostate cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2014, Pastore was particularly interested in supporting others facing the disease. Villano said his friend had "fought, battled and won" his own cancer fight. He also shared that Pastore donated the money he earned on "Celebrity Apprentice" to charity.

Friends, neighbors, and Actor and Stuntman Chuck Zito gathered outside Pastore's longtime home on the evening of his death, Saturday. It was the house where he had lived for three decades and where a life filled with unexpected reinvention came to its quiet end.

Pastore is survived by his daughter, Renee, her husband, Christopher, his siblings, Sally and Johnny, and his granddaughter, Maia. Schirripa, who played Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri on "The Sopranos," remembers Pastore as "a dear friend and a very generous, fun guy."

Schirripa also recalled Pastore joking about the number of larger actors on the series when Schirripa first joined the cast, adding, "We had a lot of laughs together over the years. I'll miss him dearly."

That warmth was not limited to his former co-stars. "He was the most loyal client and he always gave to charity," Pastore's agent McGowan told The Associated Press. "And he was the kind of guy who would help anybody, which is rare in my business."
