Funny man Dave Chappelle is known for his sharp tongue and his acerbic humor, but there is one thing he takes seriously: His family, and especially his children.

Dave's son Ibrahim Chappelle is now a young man, and it seems he's quite a fan of stand-up comedy, though not necessarily just his father's.

Dave Chappelle is a successful comedian who started in the 90s and quickly gained popularity with live and TV audiences.

In 2001, Dave married Elaine Erfe Chappelle, and the couple moved to Ohio to raise their family on a farm in Yellow Springs. That same year they welcomed their son Sulayman; in 2003, Ibrahim came into their lives, and in 2009, Sanaa, the family's baby, was born.

Dave revealed that his middle son, then twelve years old, had come to him and asked for $250 to buy two tickets for a Kevin Hart show.

Dave and Elaine have ensured that their children had the chance to grow up away from the limelight so they could have normal childhoods. As a result, Ibrahim, the middle child, is only known to have made one public appearance.

The Origin of Ibrahim Chappelle's Name

The inspiration behind Dave and Elaine's unique names for their children is straightforward. Dave converted to Islam in 1991 and named his children after his religion's tradition.

Ibrahim's name is the Arabic version of Abraham, the father of Ismail and Isaac and one of the most important prophets in the Quran. The name derives from the Hebrew "avhamon," meaning "father of many."

Ibrahim's grandparents, William David Chappelle III and Yvonne Seona were university professors. His great-great-grandfather, the first William D. Chappelle, was born a slave in 1857 and became a Methodist Bishop and the president of Allen University.

The family has a strong tradition in education, and Dave revealed that even though Sulayman attends a public school, Ibrahim has been educated in a private school, in what he jokingly refers to as "an experiment."

Ibrahim Chappelle Meets Kevin Hart

Ibrahim was the focus of one of his famous dad's comedy skits. Dave revealed that his middle son, then twelve years old, had come to him and asked for $250 to buy two tickets for a Kevin Hart show as he wanted his father to go with him.

The comedian reluctantly agreed and joked that he sat through the show, irritated because Hart was so brilliant. At the show's end, Ibrahim begged his dad to go backstage so he could meet Hart.

Hart was very gracious, welcomed Dave and Ibrahim, and invited them to dinner. After dinner, Hart gifted Ibrahim with one of his souvenir sweatshirts and told him to use it if his dad gave him a hard time.

Ibrahim and His Siblings Changed Their Father's Life

Dave has admitted that becoming a father transformed his life and made him take his work more seriously. He revealed to Gayle King in an interview for CBS:

"Everything changed after I had children. I took my professional life more seriously, and as a dude, I had more depth after I had kids."

Dave has opined that neither Ibrahim nor his brother seems to be into comedy but that his daughter Sanaa may have the spark. That may be why Ibrahim and Sulayman are never seen in public, but Sanaa has accompanied her father and mother to several public events.

Ibrahim Appeared at a Public Event Only Once

In 2005 Dave dropped the "Dave Chappelle Show," which cost him $50 million because he felt the public attention his work garnered was not healthy for his family. He said:

"What I did was step off of the main stage. Because those lights were hot, and I was trying to do other things with my life. That kind of attention wouldn't have been conducive to raising a family."

For that reason, Dave and Elaine chose to raise their family in a small Ohio town, protecting them from the impact of his controversial professional life. One of the few times Ibrahim has been seen in public and photographed was in 2019.

Ibrahim, his brother, sister, and mother were at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC., to see his father receive the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Ibrahim may not be a public figure, but he's there for his dad, just as his dad has always been there for him.
