Theater actress-cum-TV star Gold Rosheuvel has been in the global spotlight since her appearance on the hugely popular Netflix series "Bridgerton" starting in 2019. Still, amidst all that, the actress has been able to share her story as a proud member of the LGBTQ community.

Before her steep rise to stardom after playing Queen Charlotte in "Bridgerton," Rosheuvel was noted primarily for her work as a stage actress. She appeared in many productions, including the prestigious "Romeo and Juliet," "Macbeth", and "Othello." However, she also had an on-screen presence in a few movies and TV series.

As much as her professional life has progressed, her personal life has also experienced stability. From having very supportive and loving parents to being in a long-term relationship with her partner, Shireen Mula, Rosheuvel seems to have those aspects of her life in a good space.

Golda Rosheuvel Grew up in a Loving Family That Accepted Her Sexuality

Rosheuvel, like "Black Panther" star Letitia Wright, is of Guyanese descent. She was born in the Caribbean nation of Guyana on January 1, 1970, and is the older of two kids. Her parents, a Guyanese father, worked as a priest while her mother, an Englishwoman, was a social worker who specialized in dementia.

The Rosheuvel family moved to England when Golda Rosheuvel was five years old. Growing up, she was very athletic and involved in various sports, such as netball and hockey. She was also in her county's swimming team and was a record-breaker in the javelin. She was so good at sports that she thought she would have a career as an athlete.

However, as fate would have it, a severe injury sidelined her from sporting activities for a while. During that time, the ever-active girl looked for other ventures. Drama and music were her preferred choices, and her passion for those two quickly outgrew her interest in sports. She recalled:

“I remember my mum and dad took me to [a career day] at school. There was this guy sitting behind one of those white tables. And it had ‘drama’ on a sign and I was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And the rest is history.”

Her parents' fascination for music enhanced her love of music. The pair were singers who met while singing in a choir in Barbados. Their participation in orchestras and choirs was an influence on both their children. Rosheuvel's younger brother was a chorister at university and, later, a music producer.

Her parents taught them to live their lives to the fullest, and they kept that thinking even after their daughter informed them that she was a lesbian. The parents and her brother did not seem to ponder too much on the news but took it in stride. She said that her parents were accepting of her and many other people.

Golda Rosheuvel Was Advised to Stay in the Closet, but She Refused to Do So

Initially known for her work in theater, Rosheuvel's acting career continued to grow and received its crowning moment when she was given the role of Queen Charlotte in "Bridgerton" in 2019. The Shonda Rhimes-produced period drama on Netflix also featured fellow British actors Regé-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor in its first season.

Although Rosheuvel had revealed to her family that she was a lesbian, she still had to come out to the public. However, some people still did not think it would be a good idea for fans to know that, as it could potentially damage her career. She recalled an instance when a director advised her to remain silent:

“People are still told that it will damage their career. It’s a real thing. But for me, it was just so interesting that (the director) was out. I didn’t really understand the ask or the definitive ‘no’ that she was talking about, because there seemed to be this difference. There’s a private life and there’s a public life and never shall the two meet.”

Rosheuvel says she was motivated to inform fans of her sexuality to stay authentic. She respects the values of staying true to yourself and not being afraid to express yourself. The actress noted that these are some of the values her parents taught her, and the positive affirmation she got from them helped her gain that confidence.

Golda Rosheuvel Has Been in a Happy Relationship with Playwright Shireen Mula for Almost a Decade

Rosheuvel has been in a relationship with her partner, Shireen Mula, for nearly a decade now, and the two lovebirds appear to enjoy going on the journey of life together. The couple met at a friend's party and currently reside in south London.

Mula is a well-known playwright and theater-maker whose work is mainly attached to The Royal Court Theatre. She is also affiliated with the fanShen theater as an associate artist. However, her plays have been performed on various stages, including at the Ovalhouse, Theatre503, and Summerhall.

She has written many plays, and some of her most notable works include "The Justice Syndicate," "Same Same," "The Rise and Fall," and "Why is the Sky Blue?" A great writer, Mula values communication, one of the attributes she and Rosheuvel have been able to get right in their long-term relationship.

Open LGBTQ discussions have gained traction since the turn of the millennium, and Rosheuvel sees this as a step in the right direction. She noted, "It's great to talk about being gay. That's something you never see, is it? You know the color of my skin when I walk into a room, but my sexuality — and the joys of that — one never sees until you get to know me."
