Often, people take the phrase "in sickness and in health" for granted. When Stacey realized this was the case, she made a decision that would change her life for the better while also teaching someone a valuable lesson.

Christopher met Stacey just after graduating college, and the two hit it off. They shared an interest in gaming and spent much of their free time together. Stacey, a fun-loving Southern beauty, had a secret. She came from a wealthy family, and her father owned a chain of jewelry stores.

Due to her casual, tomboy style, Stacey could keep this from people as she didn't want to be treated differently. "Trust me, once they have a slice, they'll go for the whole pie," her father, Darren, would tell her. For six months, she didn't mention her background to Chris.

One day, Chris surprised Stacey by proposing to her by a lake, using his late grandmother's ring. Stacey accepted, but after talking to her dad, she wanted to ensure that Chris' heart was in the right place.

"Do you think he found out?" she asked her father.

Darren suggested that Stacey test him to find out if he was genuine.

Stacey and Chris had only been dating for half a year, and she needed to be sure. Chris was going to visit his parents over the summer break and would be out of state for a couple of months.

"I know I'll be away for a little bit, but I promise to talk to you daily, and we can even game together online," Chris told her. Stacey decided this was the perfect opportunity to see whether Chris was serious about a long-term relationship with her. A week after Chris arrived at his parent's house, Stacey gave him a call.

"Chris, I've been in a terrible car accident. I've been in the hospital for two days and can't feel my legs. The doctors say that I've been paralyzed from the waist down," Stacey said to Chris. She was lying to him and was completely fine.

There was a few seconds of awkward silence before Chris replied, "Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry, babe. Once I'm back in town, I'll come and see you right away." There was a coldness about Chris' response that made Stacey worry. After the call, she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt until he returned.

"Once you heard the word "paralyzed," I never heard from you again."

Perhaps he was just in shock and didn't know how to react. But in the days that followed, Chris broke his promise. He didn't return her text messages or check in on her. Stacey realized this was very strange for someone who was under the belief that their fiancée was paralyzed.

Even when she tried to call his phone, Chris wouldn't pick up. Days turned to weeks without a word from Chris. I'll confront him when he's back and get the truth, Stacey thought. But when Chris was due to arrive back in town, he was a no-show. When Stacey went to his apartment, she could tell that all his things had been moved out.

Chris had given up on the marriage and failed Stacey's test. She kept his grandmother's ring as a reminder of how some people won't be there for you in your darkest hour. Six months later, Chris returned to town. He believed that enough time had passed and Stacey would be over it.

"If you're going to give a woman something this precious, make sure you mean it."

He found a job as a waiter for an events company, and after a few weeks on the job, he was tasked with waiting tables at a wedding. He was surprised by how elaborate the wedding was and that guests were tipping him even though they weren't required to. But the most shocking part of the wedding came when he saw the bride.

Dressed in a beautiful, vintage wedding gown was his ex-fiancée, Stacey. She stood tall and was as gorgeous as ever. Chris couldn't believe his eyes. But she said she was disabled. How did they fix her up? He wondered. After the newlyweds said their I Dos, Chris found a moment to tap Stacey on the shoulder.

"Well, look who it is," she said. Stacey laughed for a second before saying, "Just give me one second. I'll come and talk to you." Chris could see Stacey briefly talk to her maid-of-honor before grabbing something inside a handbag. She then returned to speak to Chris.

"I-I don't know what to say. You look amazing! I'm guessing the doctors were able to fix you up," Chris said.

"I was never disabled. I was just testing to see if you were serious about me. Once you heard the word "paralyzed," I never heard from you again. Also, I don't know if you found out, but my father paid for all of this. I don't like flaunting it, but I come from money."

Chris was stunned by Stacey's words. He needed to take a moment to digest it.

"I can't believe it. The only thing I can say is that I'm sorry. I'm ashamed about how I left things. I clearly have to learn. I need to be a better man. If you don't mind me asking, did he have to pass the same test?" Chris asked as he pointed to Stacey's new husband, Harry.

Stacey looked lovingly at Harry before replying, "He didn't have to. My house caught on fire just after we started dating, and I was trapped. Harry risked his life saving me. The rest was history." Chris offered his congratulations and was about to leave before Stacey grabbed his hand.

"One more thing, Chris. You forgot this," she said as she placed Chris' grandmother's ring in his hand.

"I know a thing or two about love, and I know a lot about diamonds. If you're going to give a woman something this precious, make sure you mean it," Stacey told him.

After the wedding, Chris sat in the parking lot, staring at the ring. That day, he learned a valuable lesson and decided to change for the better.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Always guard your heart. If Stacey had ignored her suspicions, then she might have ended up marrying someone who wouldn't be there for her in a time of crisis. Luckily, she trusted her gut and found someone who put their life on the line for her.
  • Don't take love for granted. Chris wasn't truly ready to dedicate his life to another person, yet still promised the world to Stacey, knowing that his heart wasn't in it. In the end, he realized that he was wasting her time.
