Three Siblings Lose Parents Months Apart — Get a New Family and Unconditional Love
In the most heart-wrenching turn of events, three young siblings saw their lives falling apart after their parents died within four months. While reeling from insurmountable grief and loss, they found hope and a loving family thanks to their community rallying around them.
Megan and Gregory "Greg" Haupt shared many years of romantic dates and golden memories before eternalizing their love in September 2008. After exchanging vows, the couple built a lovely home and embraced parental bliss by welcoming their three bundles of joy—two boys and a girl.
The Haupt kids—Henry Ryan, Max Alexander, and Jane Louise—filled their lives with endless love and joy and were all incredibly special. Life was beautiful for the family of five, and they considered themselves fortunate for being blessed with the best. Little did they know what fate had in store for them.

A Painful Diagnosis
In 2020, Greg was diagnosed with colon cancer—news that turned his and his family's lives topsy-turvy. Although the diagnosis had terrible timing, he decided to make the most of his time with his loved ones and live each day to the fullest.
Amidst the tragedy, Krista and Dave also realized they needed to be more careful about their health.
A Special Song for the Loves of His Life
While bravely fighting his battle with cancer, Greg, a talented musician and songwriter, penned a heartwarming song, "Three Six Nine, Loves of Mine," for his three lovely children, Jane, Max, and Henry. The title depicted the kids' ages, and the lyrics encapsulated the devoted dad's unconditional love for them.
Although the father of three tried his best, he could not buy more time to be with his wife and children. And so, in an unexpected and tragic twist of fate, 40-year-old Greg took his last breath on April 5, 2022, after a heroic two-year battle with cancer, leaving his family and friends forever broken.
Gone but Never Forgotten
Known for his witty banters, creative streak, and sheer optimism, Greg was not only a loving husband and affectionate father but also a caring friend. He loved supporting his community and genuinely cared about making other people's lives better. A part of his online obituary read:
"Though his time was far too short, Greg is envied for the richness of the life he lived, and he lives on as a legend in the hearts of the many thousands he made smile."
Another Heart-Rending Tragedy
After losing their dad, Henry, Max, and Jane were heartbroken and sought refuge in their mom's loving embrace. But less than five months after Greg's sad demise, the Haupt kids witnessed another unspeakable tragedy—one they had never seen coming.
On August 27, 2022, Megan, 40, passed away unexpectedly, only a few hours after her daughter's fifth birthday celebration. The gut-wrenching news crushed her family, particularly her little ones, who were still reeling from the loss of their dad.
Later, it was revealed that the devoted mother had died because of an underdiagnosed heart disease that led to cardiac arrest. Within a span of four months, Henry, 11, Max, 8, and Jane, 5, became orphans, having lost the two most important people in their lives.
Megan was a kind and loving soul with a heart of gold and a benevolent spirit. Her husband and children meant the world to her, but she was also incredibly attached to her twin sister and soulmate, Krista Lieber. Megan loved to sing and was full of laughter, joy, and love.
Supporting the Children
A GoFundMe account was created to provide financial assistance to the Haupt siblings in the face of their unimaginable tragedy. As of December 23, 2022, it has garnered $149,000 of the targeted goal of $200,000, and more donations continue to pour in. A part of the caption on the fundraising page read:
"So many people have reached out and asked what they can do to help. Because of how unexpected this was, we are raising money as a starting point for Henry, Max, and Jane to assist in the cost of raising them."
Taking in the Three Siblings
After Greg and Megan's tragic and unexpected deaths, Krista, Megan's twin sister, and her husband, Dave Lieber, took in the three Haupt children. Krista recalled that when her sister died, she was tasked with sharing the news with the kids.
She recalled how young Henry was reduced to tears, and she had to reassure him that she and Dave would always love and care for him and his siblings. Thereafter, the Liebers, who already had three children of their own, became an extended family of eight.
Dave's brother, John Lieber, and the entire community rallied around the youngsters to provide them with emotional and financial assistance in their time of adversity and sorrow. Maddie Martin, a family friend of the Haupts, shared:
"All Greg and Megan would want them to have is everything and this fundraiser that we're working on is just everything that we would try and help them with because kids are very expensive."
It Takes a Village
In addition to people showering the Liebers with continued love and support, their community from St. Louis, Missouri, stepped up to provide them with whatever help possible. Krista and Dave noted that it took a village for them to surround their children with love and care they rightly deserved.
And so, after a season of heart-stopping grief and trauma, unwavering hope and unconditional love surrounded Henry, Max, and Jane. The children wholeheartedly embraced their new family, navigating life with their loving aunt, uncle, and cousins.
Prioritizing Their Health & Navigating Life Together
Amidst the tragedy, Krista and Dave also realized they needed to be more careful about their health. Shortly after Greg's demise, Dave discovered he had an autoimmune disease. Later, Krista learned that she had Long QT syndrome after she experienced breathlessness and palpitations.
Initially, the Missouri resident shrugged it off as anxiety but soon realized it was better to get herself checked. Krista and Dave admitted that despite experiencing a string of unfortunate events, life had only taught them to be more patient and cherish their time with family.
The Liebers are hopeful that with their community's support and their closely-knit bond, they and their lovely children will be okay. While Henry, Max, and Jane will always miss their parents, we are relieved to know that they have a supportive family to care for them.
