29-year-old Chuck had few friends, no family, and worked even during holidays. He was a cop, and one Christmas, while patrolling the neighborhood, he crossed paths with a little girl, unaware she'd reunite him with his first love…

It was a wintry day during the Christmas season. While the entire city was rushing home to spend time with their loved ones, Chuck was driving his patrol car around the neighborhood under his supervision.

Chuck was too young to be a workaholic of that sort, but the young man didn't have any family, so he worked even during holidays. Chuck had dated a few women in the past, but nobody seemed like "THE ONE" to him, so he was single.

That day, while patrolling the neighborhood, Chuck saw a little girl struggling to decorate the huge Christmas tree on her front porch. He smiled as he saw the little human struggling with the decorations and decided to help her…

"Hello there, wonder woman, may I help you?" he asked as he parked his car outside her house and got down. "I'm a cop, and it's my duty to help and serve people!"

"But I'm a big girl, Mr. cop!" said the girl, Alice. "You may not know it, but I help Mommy with breakfast every morning!"

"Oh my god!" gasped Chuck. "Do you? Do you really cook? I burn the toast every time!"

Sometimes a miracle happens when you least expect it.

She laughed. "You're so silly! Now, don't disturb me. I have to get the tree decorated before Mommy comes home! It's a surprise!"

"Well," Chuck said. "How about I help you? Do you have someone else at home to help you?"

Alice shook her head. "Mommy and I live alone. Mrs. Green next door looks after me when Mommy's not home, but she's busy with guests, so Mommy told me to stay home and not open my door to strangers! You are a stranger, but… you're a cop! Cops help everyone, and you can help me!"

Chuck laughed. "You're so small, but you know so much! You're clever, miss smarty pants!"

"Alice!" she said. "Please call me Alice!"

"Hi, Alice! I'm Chuck! So shall we get the tree ready soon?" he asked.

"Okay!" she chirped.

Chuck had never met someone like Alice. She was not even half as tall as the Christmas tree she was decorating, and she wouldn't stop talking! A chatterbox she is, he thought and laughed while they decorated the tree together and put lights all around the house.

Chuck felt good being kind to the little girl, but more than that, he loved the experience of making Christmas preparations with someone. He had never decorated a house before for Christmas.

"So, what time does your mommy come home, Alice?" Chuck asked as they finished decorating the tree. "Here, give me the star, and I'll put it."

"Umm…" Alice paused. "I want to put it on the tree, Chuck! Can you please help me?"

"You, smarty pants!" he sighed. "There you go, girl!" Chuck lifted Alice, and she placed the star on the tree finally. "WOW! Mommy will love this!" she laughed.

Right then, a car pulled over outside Alice's house, and Alice said, "That's Mommy's car. Chuck! She's home!"

Chuck was shocked as Alice's mother, Jane, got out of her car. She was beautiful, and he would never forget her ocean blue eyes, golden curls, and kind smile, nor would he forget the woman who was his first love!

Chuck couldn't believe the girl he had helped was his first love's daughter.

"Oh god, Chuck?" Jane was shocked to see Chuck at her house. "You… you're a cop? I didn't expect to see you here!"

"Hey," Chuck said shyly. "How have you been? I… I was just helping Alice coz she was struggling to decorate the tree, you know…"

"Chuck helped me, Mommy!" chirped Alice. "He's very sweet. Did you like the surprise?"

"Oh well…" Jane nervously glanced at the Christmas tree and smiled. "It's lovely, darling. Thank you!"

"Mommy, you should thank Chuck, too! Do you know him? You already knew his name!"

"Umm…we were friends, honey…" Jane said. "Back in school… How about we thank Chuck for decorating the tree and treat him to a lovely dinner?"

Chuck modestly refused, but Jane insisted, so he finally agreed. After Alice finished dinner and went to bed, Chuck and Jane were having coffee, reminiscing about the good old days.

After finishing school, Jane relocated to a new city with her parents, and she and Chuck broke up abruptly.

"Then they forced me to date someone rich, and I got pregnant with his child. I didn't love him… It was nothing serious from my side," Jane revealed.

"Mom and Dad wanted me to marry him, but I didn't love him. Well, he agreed, too, that he didn't want anything serious… He didn't want to raise Alice, but I wanted her. Mom and Dad asked me to terminate the pregnancy when they found out about it. Can you believe that? So I moved here… This is my late Grandpa's home…"

"Well," said Chuck. "Alice is happy with you, so I think it all worked out for the best! By the way, are you free tomorrow? How about grabbing some coffee…"

Chuck asked Jane out on a date, and she said yes immediately. Neither of them knew they would cross paths in an unknown city like that, but sometimes, miracles happen. And the ones happening on Christmas are indeed special.

Chuck and Jane married soon after, and Alice got a loving dad in Chuck.
