Bob had gotten to a point in his marriage where he was taking his wife for granted and mistreating her. However, after coming home to his son wearing his clothes and imitating his bad behavior, his perspective was changed.

Bob was the breadwinner of his home. He worked long hours as a sales consultant. Over the years, it seemed that Bob began to take his wife, Joanna, for granted.

Joanna was a stay-at-home wife and would handle everything around the house like cooking, mopping, washing, laundry, etc. She loved her family dearly and did her best to make their house a home and keep everything in order.

Bob and Joanna had two children, their older son, Joe, and their younger son, Liam. Joe had started to notice a pattern in their home that rubbed him the wrong way.

He noticed that his father was straying away from the strong pillar that he, his brother, and his mother used to look up to. He would always come back home complaining and taking out his frustrations from work on his wife.

Joe had always idolized his father and saw him as one of his heroes. However, his recent behavior began to worry him. Bob always came home with a complaint. There was always something Joanna wasn't doing right in his eyes. If it wasn't the way his food was prepared, it was a small stain on the carpet.

"Joanna, I do everything for you, and you can't even cook me a decent meal. You are useless!"

"Joanna, I work every day to make sure we have what we need. To make sure all of you are secure. And what do you do? Nothing!" Bob would often say. These were some of the many insults he would throw at his devoted wife.

Joanna was truly devoted to his family, and her efforts spoke for themself. This is a large part of the reason seeing his father behave the way he did grieved Joe dearly. He saw the work Joanna put in day and night to make sure they were all okay and felt loved.

One day Joe decided he would play a prank on his father, hoping that it might wake him up to his faults. Joe got dressed in his father's clothing and waited for him to return from work.

When Bob got back from work, he found Joe in his clothes, dragging his weight around as he barked orders to Joanna.

"Joanna, I do everything for you, and you can't even cook me a decent meal. You are useless!" Joe barked, imitating his father.

"Joe! What's gotten into you? Don't talk to your mother like that!" an irked Bob told his son.

"Why not? You do it all the time. I'm just picking up what I've learned from you," Joe calmly said.

Bob couldn't believe what he was hearing. A part of him was angry that his son had the nerve to call him out like that. But, at the same time, he knew there was truth to what his son was saying.

In recent times he had noticed that the peace of their home had somehow been taken away. For the longest time, he found comfort in blaming Joanna, but the truth was he was robbing his own home of peace.

Bob decided to talk to his wife and have a much-needed honest conversation. They excused themselves and went to the room for a chat.

"Well, for one, you can start by helping me make dinner and letting your children know things will be different. Then, stick to that promise."

"Was Joe right about what he said out there? Is that how I treat you?" Bob asked Joanna earnestly.

"Yes, it's true. Bob, recently you've been so cold and distant. Not just to me but to your children too. I know things can get hectic at work, but we are supposed to be a support system. We should be able to confide in each other, not hurt each other," Joanna said.

"I'm sorry. I didn't realize how my actions were badly impacting you all. I just wanted to work hard and be able to provide for you. I guess somewhere along the line, I forgot that provision is not just monetary but emotional as well," Bob confessed.

"I understand, and I'm happy we can finally have this conversation. I'm just sad it took our son prancing around in one of your suits for us to do so," Joanna said, laughing.

"I know, right?!" Bob said, joining her in laughter. "So, how do I make things right?" Bob asked.

"Well, for one, you can start by helping me make dinner and letting your children know things will be different. Then, stick to that promise," Joanna said as she hugged her husband warmly.

That day Bob let his wife and children relax as he served them dinner. It had been a while since Bob had cooked for his wife, and she appreciated being served by her husband again.

Bob's cooking was one of the reasons Joanna fell for him. So, to finally have him cook for her again brought her great joy. At dinner, Bob apologized to both his sons for how he had treated them and their mother.

His son's appreciated the meal and Bob's apology. They looked forward to this new chapter of their lives. Bob was completely astonished at his children's maturity. They were his children, yet they were able to teach him how he should treat his wife.

He was ashamed he had lost his way, but he was very much determined to right his wrongs. From that day, Bob did his best to do right by his family, and peace was restored to their home.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Treat your family right. Bob had begun to take Joanna and his children for granted. He mistreated his wife, and his behavior was reflected in his children's view of him.
  • Be humble and accept your wrongs. If Bob had not decided to humble himself and try to patch things up with his family, they might not have been able to restore peace in their home. However, he took Joe's words and allowed them to be his wake-up call and an opportunity to engage in conversation with his family.
