Robby Benson and Karla DeVito met in 1981 while he played the role of Frederic, and she starred as Mabel in Broadway's "Pirates." The couple tied the knot in July of that same year.

In 1982, Robby was 26, and his wife was 29. He was described as gentle with a sweet face and diligent, while his wife was said to be bouncy, sexy, and had a singing voice that could make a pirate king swoon.

DeVito wasn't interested in romance or falling in love with anyone when the duo met. However, when she met Robby, she "liked him totally" and thought he was humble, creative, and lovely.

She also thought he was earnest. After knowing the actress for two months, Robby decided he wanted her to be his off-screen bride, but DeVito hadn't had time to figure out her feelings when she left the show, causing them to separate.

The star left to go on a three months record promotion tour that had been prearranged. Robby was left feeling "devastated," and before she left in January 1981, he asked her to go live with him at his home in San Fernando Valley.

DeVito agreed, and on July 11, 1982, the couple married in the actress's Mokena, Illinois, hometown. She revealed that Robby was the first person who spoke of marriage "in a real sense" and had a lovely way of discussing their future.

The star speculated that she'd never thought about the future because of her father's early passing. Robby said he wanted to take six months off work to be a househusband and couldn't imagine anything better than following his wife around with their baby.

The star was 28 when he had his first heart surgery, the first of four he would go through. He was born with a congenital heart valve defect, and he kept it a secret because studios didn't hire people they thought were sick.

Because if an actor who was the show's star died, production had to shut down, or they had to reshoot. Rod Steiger, a fellow actor, even advised Robby never to tell anyone if anything happened to his heart because it would be career suicide.
