What gives John the strength to go on after losing his wife?
Olivia Newton-John's widower, John Easterling, recently opened up about the death of his late wife for the very first time. Newton-John's daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, joined her stepfather in remembering the last days of her mother's life.
The two spoke candidly to TODAY's Hoda Kotb, sharing details about her life before her death and how they've been handling life after she passed. Newton-John sadly passed away at the age of 73. Her death came 14 years after she and Easterling tied the knot. Although they only married in 2008, they had known one another for 15 years before they said their vows.

Easterling and Newton-John initially met through a mutual friend. They started dating in 2007. The two shared an interest in holistic cures and alternative medicines, and later, when Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer, Easterling assisted his then-wife during her time of need.
Tragically, Newton-John lost the battle against the illness and passed away on her ranch.
Easterling also did his best to raise awareness for cancer by doing countless cancer walks and organizing a number of cancer benefits. The two also worked together to start the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund in 2020, which aims to raise funds for research into plant-based cancer cures.

Newton-John and Easterling made their relationship public in 2007, and in 2008, the couple decided to elope together. Unfortunately, Newton-John's breast cancer returned a few years after their marriage was first diagnosed with the disease in 1992. She underwent therapy on multiple occasions, but the disease kept coming back. Tragically, Newton-John lost the battle against the illness and passed away on her ranch. Easterling commented:
"Late at night, early in the morning. I'll just be walking around the house, or throwing the ball for the dogs and just speak to her out loud."

Easterling spoke about her last few days, saying Newton-John didn't suffer at all. She was "clear" and "conscious" in her last days, and he mentioned she had a great quality of life. Easterling also noted that she tried to give others suffering like her the same standard of living as she had in her last days.
Olivia's Unexpected Love to John at Almost 60 after Her Ex Went Missing
Newton-John's first marriage failed after her previous husband, Patrick McDermott, suddenly disappeared. After searching for him and finding no evidence that he was alive, authorities and Newton-John herself decided to declare him legally dead.
Overcoming his grief was a great challenge for Easterling.

The actress mentioned that the entire ordeal was highly traumatizing. One aspect that she struggled with was not having McDermott around, but she admitted the hardest part was not knowing what had happened to him. She commented:
"One of the hardest things is not knowing. I'm very lucky I have a wonderful, beautiful husband who is just so loving and fantastic. I always tell my friends you're never too old to find love. I found the love of my life at 59 going on 60! I'm grateful."

After McDermott's disappearance, she thought she was done with love. She mentioned, "I dated a little bit, but I wasn't expecting to fall in love with him — and then bam!" A few years later, proof was found that McDermott had faked his own death and started a new life in Mexico.
What Gives John the Strength to Live Further
Overcoming his grief was a great challenge for Easterling. He could barely go on, and he missed his companion greatly. However, he revealed a close friend said something to him that made him realize he had the strength to carry on.
Easterling's friend had said to him that he was lucky enough to find his soulmate. The friend noted that he had found someone with whom he sahred a heart, and now that the other half of their pair has passed on, Easterling had the responsibility to "live life for both."
The heartfelt words made the grieving widower realize he had to keep living, not for himself, but to keep the memory of his late wife alive. He mentioned that the wise words "gave [him] a way forward." So, he got himself out of his rut and started living again.
The words also prompted Easterling to so the first interview after Newton-John had passed. He also shared a video montage on Instagram of him and his late wife. The video included countless special moments playing one after the other. In the caption, Easterling wrote simply, "Love is eternal."
His followers reacted, expressing their sorrow at Newton-John, who passed pf the same disease as Patrick Leno. One said, "What a great husband, friend, partner you have been to Olivia." Another commented sweetly, "Awwwe John I know you must miss her terribly! The world misses her too! Thanks for sharing!"
