For years, the Brown family presented themselves as a close-knit clan surviving against the odds in the wilderness. But behind the scenes, the stars of "Alaskan Bush People" have faced a series of devastating challenges that tested their bonds in ways viewers could scarcely imagine.

From life-threatening illnesses to shocking family divisions, the Browns' story has become far more complicated than their rugged lifestyle ever suggested. The Brown family first captured viewers' attention through Discovery's "Alaskan Bush People," which followed Billy and Ami Brown and their seven children as they lived an unconventional life far from modern society.

According to an ABC News report, the family often spent months without seeing anyone outside their community while living deep in the Alaskan wilderness.

That isolation became part of their identity, but it would eventually be challenged by circumstances no amount of wilderness experience could prepare them for.

Ami Brown's Fight for Her Life

One of the family's most difficult chapters began when matriarch Ami Brown was diagnosed with lung cancer. The diagnosis forced the Browns to consider leaving the bush behind so Ami could receive treatment. Speaking on the show, Ami admitted the possibility of leaving their home was "earth shattering" for the family.

"It's hard to even talk about it, because it's something I never thought would come out of my mouth," Brown told the cameras. "This is earth shattering for us, it really is."

The situation became even more alarming as details of her condition emerged. In a Fox News interview, Ami revealed the physical toll of radiation and chemotherapy. "It hurts. Everything hurts," she said while discussing her treatment.

At one point, Ami was reportedly given just a 3 percent chance of survival. Despite those odds, she refused to give up. "I realized early into this that it’s very easy to want to give up and just die. And on the pessimist side, it could be my last days. But I have the will to fight," she said.

The family's determination carried them through months of uncertainty. According to Country Living, Ami eventually received remarkable news: she was declared cancer-free after undergoing grueling treatment. Still, the experience changed the family forever.

Ami's Health Remains a Concern

Although Ami ultimately beat cancer, recent events have shown that health concerns continue to follow the Brown family. In an April 2026 update shared on Instagram, Bear Brown revealed that his mother had been taken to the hospital after developing a fever and congestion.

"Mom is sick," Bear told followers. "She's not feeling particularly well." The reality star explained that family members acted quickly once they realized something was wrong. Bear admitted the news immediately alarmed him because of the family's previous experiences with Ami's health.

"I'm obviously worried the instant that I heard that," he said. "Last year, you know, we almost lost mom from pneumonia and all. Still, Bear expressed confidence in his mother's resilience.

"Mom's pretty tough," he said. "I'm obviously sure she'll pull through." As the family navigated Ami's health crisis, another painful chapter awaited them.

Billy Brown's Heartbreaking Legacy

Billy Brown, the family's patriarch, had long been the driving force behind the Brown family's lifestyle and philosophy. His own life story was marked by tragedy. According to Us Weekly, Billy lost his parents and sister in a plane crash when he was just 16 years old.

Years later, he built a family with Ami and dedicated himself to creating the off-grid life that eventually became the focus of the Discovery series. That journey came to a sudden end in February 2021.

Bear announced that Billy had died after suffering a seizure at age 68. "We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved patriarch, Billy Brown, passed away last night after suffering from a seizure. He was our best friend — a wonderful and loving dad, granddad, and husband, and he will be dearly missed," Bear wrote at the time.

Discovery also paid tribute to Billy, calling him "a trailblazer" and "one of a kind," Variety reported. "We are devastated to hear of Billy Brown’s sudden passing. He has been part of the Discovery family for years — a trailblazer, a lovely man, and most definitely one of a kind."

His death left a massive void within the family.

Another Health Scare Rocks the Browns

As if Ami's cancer battle and Billy's death weren't enough, another member of the family found herself confronting serious health concerns. Snowbird "Birdy" Brown recently shared a detailed update about her own medical struggles.

In a May 2026 Instagram update, Snowbird "Bird" Brown shared a candid look at her ongoing medical journey. Bird reminded followers that she underwent emergency abdominal surgery several years ago after doctors discovered two massive tumors.

"One was 8 pounds, one was 4 pounds," she explained. "I was really sick for a while before the surgery, super sick after the surgery."

Thankfully, the tumors were not cancerous. "I am healed from the surgery and the removal of the tumors. Luckily, they were not cancerous. They were benign," Bird said.

However, the reality star revealed that doctors warned that the cystic tumors could potentially return. "My doctor said that if they do return, there's like an 80-something percent chance that they'll be cancerous this time," she explained.

For now, Bird said she remains hopeful. "They haven't returned so far, so far so good," she said. "I just have my fingers crossed that they stay away and they don't come back."

The health battle didn't end there. While choosing not to disclose every detail, Bird revealed she has been dealing with other medical issues for several years and confirmed that she has long struggled with anemia.

"Some people have noticed that I'm tired all the time," she said. "A lot of that is the anemia." Bird described the condition's impact on her daily life. "You're tired when you're anemic. You get cold easier. You're worn out and just don't really feel like doing anything a lot of the time."

She also revealed that she recently underwent an iron infusion and expects additional treatment in the near future. Despite the challenges, Bird made it clear she is focused on moving forward. "Health issues are never fun," she admitted. "The worry for the tumors not returning is not fun, but I'm doing well."

She added, "I am working to build up my homestead," before reassuring fans once again: "Health-wise, I am doing good."

The Family's Most Complicated Chapter

Yet perhaps the most controversial and heartbreaking storyline involves the family's eldest son, Matt Brown. For years, Matt was one of the most recognizable faces on "Alaskan Bush People." But as time passed, his relationship with the rest of the family became increasingly strained. The first public signs of trouble appeared years ago.

In a 2016 interview published by People via Yahoo Entertainment, Matt spoke candidly about his struggles with alcohol. "I could see myself spiraling," he admitted. Matt explained that what began as casual drinking eventually became a growing concern:

"I started drinking lightly, and then it got to be more and more. That's when I saw the problem around the corner, and I didn't want to be one of those guys."

Recognizing the problem, he entered an inpatient rehabilitation program and spent 35 days working on his recovery. At the time, he described his family's support as "unbelievable." "There was a lot of anxiety [...] But their support was unbelievable. It instantly made me feel better and like I could be successful on this journey," he says.

But the years that followed proved far more difficult. Matt's relationship with the rest of the Brown family appeared to become increasingly strained in the years following his departure from "Alaskan Bush People."

Growing Distance and Family Tensions

According to a TMZ report, family members allegedly grew concerned about Matt's behavior long before Billy Brown died in 2021. The outlet reported that many relatives had distanced themselves from Matt years earlier amid concerns about his ongoing personal struggles.

Those concerns resurfaced after a recent livestream that drew attention online. TMZ reported that Matt allegedly appeared nude and intoxicated while livestreaming from a public park in Washington state. During the broadcast, he allegedly wandered around town while speaking incoherently, and at one point appeared to be carrying a gun while continuing to stream.

Family sources told the outlet that incidents like that were among the reasons relatives chose to distance themselves from him. According to the report, Ami initially resisted cutting off communication with her eldest son. However, sources claimed Matt's siblings eventually urged her to create distance after years of watching him repeatedly struggle.

The report further alleged that concerns about Matt's behavior had become a source of tension within the family and that some relatives viewed separation as necessary for both their safety and the family's public image.

While communication reportedly continued on occasion, Matt largely remained separate from much of the family in recent years. Sources also told TMZ that Gabe Brown was the only sibling who still occasionally maintained contact with Matt, though those interactions were reportedly rare.

The situation fueled years of speculation among fans about what was really happening behind the scenes. Then came an even more devastating development.

A Tragic Ending

Just days ago, Bear shared heartbreaking news about his brother in a TikTok video. Bear said he had received reports suggesting Matt may have died, though he repeatedly stressed that he could not independently confirm the information at the time.

"I can't confirm that it's 100 percent true right now," Bear told viewers. "But it is what I'm hearing." Bear said Matt "was seen in a river, at a river or close to a river" and later "floating down the river," and that someone had "called police," who had been "trying to find the body."

"All the witnesses are saying that it was Matt," Bear said, visibly emotional. "Someone definitely did, and a lot of people are thinking that it's him. ... It looks like it is. ... It's looking very likely that it is the case." The reality star went on to discuss his brother's long-running struggles and pushed back against claims that the family had abandoned him.

"Everyone thinks the family has shunned him, but that's not actually the case," Bear said. He added that he had continued encouraging Matt to stay focused on his sobriety and seek help when needed.

Bear also recalled what he said was one of their last conversations:

"He called me after that, and he said that he had fallen off the wagon. I was like, 'Well, get back on it, man. Everybody falls off. Just get back on it. Go to rehab if you've got to. You've got this.'"

While emphasizing that he could not yet verify the reports, Bear admitted he was deeply concerned. "I would have never thought that Matt would take his own life, honestly," he said. "It's looking very likely that it is the case."

Shortly afterward, Bear shared a second update on Instagram, saying authorities had recovered a body that was identified as Matt. "I would have never suspected he would have hurt himself, honestly," Bear said. "He struggled for a long time." Bear also used the emotional update to urge viewers to think carefully about the impact of online criticism.

"One of his last videos, he's actually talking about how negative people were on his posts," he said. "Y'all guys should keep in mind that people on the other side of your screen, people that you're watching a video of, they're real people too."

He concluded with a plea for compassion toward his family, particularly his mother. "I would ask people to please, please be respectful to my family and to my mom," Bear said. "Please watch the comments that you leave, guys. Sometimes words can hurt more than fists can."

Bear added, "Mom cares very much for Matt and always has and has been through a lot for him, a lot. So please don't attack my mom."
