Tom Cruise's Daughter, Suri, Makes a Major Legal Move — Photos
For years, Suri Cruise has gradually stepped out from the shadow of one of Hollywood's most famous surnames.
Now, the 20-year-old has reportedly made her biggest move yet — one that appears to mark a new chapter in her life while drawing renewed attention to her relationship with her famous father.
According to CBS News, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed Suri in April 2006, just months before tying the knot later that year, instantly making their daughter one of the world's most talked-about celebrity children.

How Suri's Relationship With Tom Changed Over the Years
According to the publication, her father's spokesman, Arnold Robinson, said in a statement, "Suri Cruise came into the world at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 20 inches long. Her name has its origins in Hebrew, meaning 'princess,' or in Persian, meaning 'red rose.'"

But the family's story changed dramatically in 2012 when the "Dawson's Creek" actress filed for divorce after nearly six years of marriage. As BBC News reported at the time, Katie sought sole custody of their daughter, bringing an end to one of Hollywood's most closely watched relationships.
Following the split, Suri remained with Katie in New York. Over the years, reports suggested that her relationship with Tom became increasingly distant.

According to People, Tom acknowledged in 2013 that he had gone more than 100 days without seeing Suri in person because of filming commitments. However, he said he spoke to her frequently by phone and described her as "a very happy child, and confident, and has a good sense of herself."
Years later, during an interview with E! News, the "Mission: Impossible" actor was asked what his perfect Father's Day would look like. After pausing, he replied, "Just having fun, man. Making movies, big adventures, and having a great time." His answer drew attention online because it did not mention any of his children.

Katie's Pride as Suri Started Her Own Journey
As Suri prepared for college, Katie reflected on watching her daughter embrace a new stage of life. Speaking with Town & Country, the actress said, "I'm proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I'm really proud of her, and I'm happy."
"I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It's exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that."

The Clue That Pointed to a Bigger Change
Even before the latest development, there were signs that Suri was carving out an identity separate from her father. During her June 2024 high school graduation, she appeared in the ceremony pamphlet without using her father's surname.
At the time, Page Six reported that sources said the move honored her mother by using Katie's middle name while also helping her establish her own identity before college.

Suri's First Public Romance Drew Plenty of Attention
That same month, another milestone in Suri's personal life also made headlines. In June 2024, Daily Mail identified her prom date as fellow LaGuardia High School student and aspiring musician Toby Cohen. The pair were photographed holding hands as they arrived at prom, wearing matching corsages before later posing together with friends.
According to the outlet, Toby planned to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and had already built an online following by posting performances and original songs on TikTok and YouTube.
Where Her Relationship Stands Today
Although the two appeared happy together during the summer of 2024, the romance did not last. According to a later Daily Mail report, Suri and Toby quietly ended their relationship before leaving for college.
An insider told the outlet, "Suri believed she was in love and wasn't afraid to show the world, so the breakup was not easy on her, but she has worked through this with the help of her friends."
Another source added, "They split quietly at the end of summer. She was good friends with him for a long time, so that made it especially hard, but she's a strong young woman."
The report also stated that the pair are "currently not in communication," though Suri reportedly has "no hard feelings towards him." Sources added that she has instead focused on embracing college life and everything that comes with this new stage.
Now, another major step from that period of Suri's life has come to light.

Suri's Legal Move That Made It Official
Page Six reports that Suri has officially severed ties with her estranged father by legally dropping "Cruise" from her name.
Public records reportedly show that when she registered to vote in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in October 2024 during her freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University, she did so under the legal name Suri Noelle. The outlet also reported that Pennsylvania courts confirmed voters must register using their legal name.
According to the report, Suri did not file a name-change request in Allegheny County, suggesting it may have happened earlier in New York before she left for college. Exactly when the change became official remains unclear, but she has publicly used the surname Noelle for some time.

Where Suri Is Today
Away from the headlines, Suri Cruise has continued pursuing acting while studying at Carnegie Mellon.
According to the outlet, she recently appeared as Angel in the staged reading "Cosmic Microwave Background," is set to star in "Midsummer!" — a modern take on A Midsummer Night's Dream — and will perform alongside fellow Carnegie Mellon students before the production heads to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe next month.
