A mother grieved her son thinking he had died after he failed to contact them for years. 12 years later, she suddenly received a phone call from a hospital, proving to her that miracles do happen – she was speaking to her son who was alive and well in France.

A mom would do anything for their children – even if it means waiting patiently for them to come home when they're finally ready to. For Joyce Curtis of Scotland, she decided to grieve the lose of her son after failing to get in touch with him for over a decade.

Curtis' son, Nicholas, went on a trip around Europe after quitting his job. Whenever his mom tried to check on him, Nicholas would tell her that he had been hitchhiking.

Finding Nicholas

After some initial communication, Nicholas' mother never heard from him again. She decided to report him as missing in 2009, hoping the authorities could help her find him.

The following year, the British Consulate wrote to her informing her that Nicholas was confined in a hospital in France. Without hesitation, she flew to Paris with her husband to see their son.

At the hospital, Joyce helped Nicholas prepare for his trip back home to the United Kingdom. She had even purchased him new clothes for his flight, but unfortunately, he never took it.

Losing Touch for the Second Time

The mother, who worked at a hospital in the UK at the time, flew back home with her husband earlier than their son's scheduled flight. She anticipated his arrival at Glasgow, but he never made it back home.

Looking back at the difficult time in her life, Joyce recalls calling every airport to see if Nicholas ever boarded. To her surprise, he never hopped on a flight, and somehow disappeared again.

Making Peace with Their Reality

In the next couple of years, Joyce made peace with the fact that maybe Nicholas would never make it home. She grieved him for years, and lost all hope amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, thinking maybe her son eventually died.

However, just a couple of days before Christmas 2022, the mom got her Christmas miracle when the British Consulate messaged her after Nicholas somehow wound up in the hospital again. "When I got the call to say he was alive, I just went into shock," the mom admitted.

Receiving a Christmas Miracle

To Joyce, finding out where Nicholas was, and more importantly, learning he was okay was a miracle. She likened the discovery to a movie, saying:

"It's like that film, 'Miracle on 34th Street.' It's like a miracle."

Never in her wildest dreams did she think she'd ever hear from the British Consulate again, especially after what happened back in 2010. Finally, after more than a decade, Joyce was able to speak to Nicholas on the phone.

When she asked him if he was coming home, he said yes. And while it seemed like deja vu, Joyce planned another trip to France to see Nicholas and hopefully finally have him with her on the flight back to Glasgow.

People on the Internet Chimed In

While many people were happy to hear that Joyce found Nicholas again after years, many expressed their doubts that the story has more to it than what meets the eye:

"What kind of miracle is it when your son doesn’t contact you for over a decade and then he does?!? I’d be wanting some answers after what he put his family through!" – Sarina Panarello (December 27, 2022)

"He was a grown man not a child. He chose to run off and not keep in touch. He’s done it before. I’d be asking some questions if I were her." – Tanya Michele Craft (December 27, 2022)

"Sounds like he doesn't want to be found by his family. As a [sic] adult and no contact for 10 years there is more going on than this story is saying." – Denise Olley (December 29, 2022)
