'Frasier's Kelsey Grammer Refuses to Apologize for His Faith after He Rejected God & Switched Beliefs

Kelsey Grammer was well known starring as psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on “Cheers.” He also featured in its spin-off "Frasier" and in February 2023, he had been the recipient of three Golden Globes and five Emmy Awards for his roles on "The Simpsons," "Frasier," and "Boss."

However, he felt his greatest work was "Jesus Revolution," a Christian drama. The star described the film as uplifting and revealed that he and his wife, Kayte Walsh, went to see it together.

He said Walsh broke down in tears and told him, 'It's the best thing you've ever done.' In the movie, the actor played the role of Chuck Smith, a real pastor, who got help from a street preacher, Lonnie Frisbee (played by Jonathan Roumie), in re-establishing his faltering church.

Roumie's character asked Kelsey's to invite rock music and young hippies to achieve change. Walsh's husband was raised as a Christian Scientist and recalled the 1960s and 70s revolution called the "Jesus movement."

The then 68 year old actor recalled how "optimistic" and "energized" the young people were during that period and he thought it was a great thing to see. Later in 2023, the star would appear in Paramount+'s revival of "Frasier."

However, Kelsey had since left the Christian Scientist fold and became a committed protestant. The actor might seem like a well-rounded off person but his background was riddled with heartbreak and rebuilding which led him to question his faith.

Why Did Kelsey Reject God & Why Won’t He Apologize for His Faith?

In January 2023, Kelsey confessed that his faith was tested several times when he experienced life tragedies that "nearly destroyed" him. For instance, his father, Frank Allen Grammer Jr., left his family leaving him to be raised by his mother.

The star grew up in New Jersey with his mother and maternal grandparents before they moved to Pompano Beach, Florida. His grandfather sadly lost his battle against cancer shortly after the move, leaving a young Kelsey devastated.

That death opened the door to more tragedies that would upend the actor's life. Despite his father re-marrying after leaving him, a close connection still remained between him and his son.

However when Kelsey was 13, Frank Jr. was killed in Saint Thomas during an altercation at his home after Martin Luther King Jr's assassination. His car was set ablaze while parked on his driveway.

When he confronted the stranger he was shot and died on the spot. Frank Jr.'s wife was the one who pulled him out of the vehicle and away from the ranting stranger who wanted to do him more harm after the shooting.

The man responsible for the crime was found not guilty due to insanity and spent decades in a psychiatric ward. The actor's sister, Karen, also died in a brutal attack and he blamed himself even though he wasn't living in the same state as her when her death occurred.

His half-brothers, Billy and Stephen Grammer, died years later in a scuba diving accident. When asked how he handled the weight of all the losses in his life, Kelsey confessed during an interview:

"I abandoned the effort to find a reason to be alive."

He later admitted that the things that happened to him were hard to explain, irrational, but happened anyway. The actor shared how he knew many people who'd lost siblings and how they blamed themselves.

He acknowledged how "Every one of us is going to experience some terrible loss. I just got a big dose." Kelsey noted how there was always a tragedy worse then the next or equally bad and he'd come to see it as a part of life.

The star shared how he'd wrestled the tragedies and worked through them. He admitted that he sometimes rejected faith and God while being angry about what was happening to him.

His [Kelsey Grammer] daughter, Mason Grammer, gushed about how her famous father had become a better parent with each child.

The actor would question God about where he was when such things occurred. However, he'd found a coping mechanism, with him stating, "But I have come to terms with it and have found great peace in my faith and in Jesus," before adding:

"It's not cavalier – Jesus made a difference in my life. That's not anything I'll apologize for."

Throughout the years, the actor married and re-married several times and bore children during those unions. One of his children once opened up about how the way he brought them up got better through the years.

Who Are Kelsey’s Children & How Did He Raise Them?

In 2021, Kelsey had seven children in total and in 2018 he revealed that fatherhood was "fantastic" and that the "energy" was "magnificent. The "Like Father" actor said being around his children wasn't an issue because he felt he was as young as them.

Speaking about his wife, the Golden Globe winner shared how she had an extraordinary and pristine capability of loving. He revealed that Walsh loved being a mother and being pregnant.

Between his youngest and oldest child there was a 33-year age gap and a lot has changed over the years about how he parents. His daughter, Mason Grammer, gushed about how her famous father had become a better parent with each child.

She said when she grew up he was "very strict" but with more experience he started loosening up. Mason's father was described as more relaxed with her younger siblings and it was a "blast!"

The "Cheers" star was married four times with Walsh being his last one. Those unions gave birth to daughters Spencer, Greer, Mason, Faith (who showed Kelsey's deep connection with his religion), and sons Jude, Gabriel, and James.
