The former news anchor started dreaming of the future and her new bundle of joy on the way. But little did she know that devastating news would soon overshadow this incredible moment of happiness.
Even though Alex and Michelle hadn't been actively trying to conceive, the news of the positive pregnancy test filled their hearts with happiness.

Unusual Symptoms and a Shocking Diagnosis
When Michelle went for her first ultrasound, she was devastated to hear that her gestational sac was empty. Her doctor advised her to wait for a natural miscarriage before intervening.
But instead of miscarrying, Michelle's body started behaving like she was carrying a viable fetus. She was throwing up, feeling tired, and experiencing other pregnancy symptoms.
Michelle returned to the doctor after a month of illness for a second ultrasound, but the result was different this time. Her hormone levels were out of control, and the woman shared:
"Essentially, it was as if I was pregnant with five babies at once."
Doctors had reason to believe something else was the matter—and they weren't wrong. Michelle was left stunned when the medical team revealed her diagnosis. It was something she had never heard of before. Michelle was experiencing a molar pregnancy.
Though treatable, the diagnosis came with a heavy blow. She would have to wait at least a year before trying to conceive again. But the worst news was yet to come.
Michelle's doctor wanted her to visit an oncologist. The referral made the mother panic, and she recalled:
"I said, 'I don't want to see an oncologist. Why do I need to see a cancer doctor?'"
Sadly, Michelle and her family were faced with more unexpected news. She was diagnosed with cancer that started in the womb and had spread to her lungs, kidney, and liver.
It was a shocking and scary diagnosis that Michelle had never expected to hear. But there was a glimmer of hope. Despite the severity of her condition, the doctors gave her a good prognosis—her cancer was highly treatable.
Her Reason for Staying Motivated amid Adversity
Michelle fought her cancer with everything she had and remained optimistic and determined. She was grateful for the support from other women, who reached out to her after hearing her story.
Michelle was also glad to have the opportunity to bring attention to a rare condition that many people may not know about. She expressed:
"When it comes to women's health, sometimes it's a taboo topic, and we're not supposed to talk about it, and I think these women [who are reaching out to me] are seeing someone in a little more spotlight talk about [it and it is] making them feel less alone, but they're making me feel less alone."
Despite many difficult moments, including hospitalization for blood loss after her first round of chemotherapy, Michelle focused on beating her cancer.
She was motivated by her love for her two children and the desire to be there for them. While she acknowledged that chemotherapy is brutal, she was grateful it improved her condition.
