3-Year-Old Girl Dies After Freak Accident with Toy at Babysitter's Home — What Her Brother Told Police

A little girl was found unresponsive beside something built for harmless pretend play. Her older brother later gave police a heartbreaking explanation, and weeks later, the police finally released a photograph of the supposed toy.

Briella Holmes was only 3 when the accident happened inside a babysitter's home in Boynton Beach, Florida. The youngest child in her family survived for four days in critical condition, but her parents would never get to bring her home.

An Ordinary Morning Became an Emergency

Briella and her preschool-age brother, Brock Holmes, were at a babysitter's residence in the Meadows of Boynton Beach community on the morning of July 23, 2026. According to a police account, the babysitter left the property and placed the children in the care of her spouse.

However, the spouse stayed upstairs while Briella and Brock played downstairs. Police said the adult periodically checked on the children and brought them snacks.

During one of those checks, the spouse discovered Briella with her head caught inside a wooden kitchen play set. She was unresponsive and no longer breathing.

The spouse freed the toddler and began emergency efforts. A call brought Boynton Beach police officers to the house shortly after 11 a.m., and they continued trying to save her when they arrived.

Boynton Beach Fire Rescue transported Briella to a local hospital. She remained alive, but her condition was critical.

At first, authorities released limited information about how a child could become trapped in a piece of playroom furniture. But Brock, who had been downstairs with his little sister, offered investigators the clearest account of what had happened.

Police said, "The toddler's sibling advised that the child's toys had fallen into the kitchen play set when they attempted to retrieve the toys and became stuck." Unfortunately, the exact sequence of events remains unanswered.

Several Days of Hope Ended in Loss

Briella spent the following days hospitalized as her family faced an ordeal few parents could put into words. She died on July 27, four days after she was found at the babysitter's home.

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner classified her death as an accident. The reported cause was "probable positional asphyxia," meaning her trapped body position likely prevented her from breathing.

Briella's mother, Suzi Holmes, 42, told the Daily Mail that she and her husband, Jason Holmes, were too shaken to discuss their daughter's death at length. "We are devastated, and we just can't talk now. We are just trying to get through each day," she said.

Police continued investigating after Briella's death. The babysitter's spouse was the person caring for the children when Briella became trapped. Authorities have confirmed that the adult remained on another floor for stretches of time, but they have not released a detailed supervision timeline.

That missing timeline is one of several matters investigators have kept private. Police have also declined to say how long the intervals between checks were or when Brock first became aware that his sister was in distress.

A Police Photograph Added a New Question

For nearly two weeks, only some of the public knew a three-year-old had become stuck in a kitchen play set, but few details about the family and the toy itself had been released. Boynton Beach police described it as an older wooden model purchased secondhand through Facebook Marketplace.

But this week, more details about the case were released, and on August 5, the department finally released a photograph. The image showed a sizable wooden pretend kitchen with two cabinet doors, a faucet, and multiple openings close to the floor.

Police found no visible markings that identified the kitchen's brand, manufacturer, or model. However, product listings reviewed by CBS12 News showed an apparently matching item sold as the "Country Living Kitchen" by Anatex Enterprises Inc.

Similar play kitchens were being advertised online for approximately $100. Anatex Enterprises has not responded to the outlet's request for comment.

The photograph also appeared to show an empty opening directly beneath the faucet. Images of the matching "Country Living Kitchen" displayed a sink insert or bowl in that same position.

The play set involved in Briella's death appeared to be missing that piece. Police have not confirmed whether the insert was absent, when it may have been removed, or whether the opening had anything to do with the entrapment.

There has also been no public finding that the kitchen's design caused the accident. The resemblance to the Anatex model comes from a comparison with online listings.

Investigators Limited What They Would Release

Before the photograph became public, CBS12 News sent Boynton Beach police several questions about the case on August 4. The outlet asked whether detectives had established a preliminary cause of death and whether the kitchen had been formally identified or was still being held as evidence.

Reporters also asked if the Consumer Product Safety Commission had been contacted. Another question concerned whether the investigation had been forwarded to the State Attorney's Office for review.

Police initially said they would consult the detectives assigned to the case. They also cautioned that an active investigation restricted the information they could provide.

The next day, the department supplied the photograph and additional background about the secondhand kitchen. It did not answer the questions concerning the missing sink insert, the mechanism that trapped Briella, the supervision timeline, or a possible criminal review.

"This investigation remains active and ongoing," the Boynton Beach Police Department said. "The Boynton Beach Police Department will not be making any additional statements at this time."

For now, no criminal charges have been announced. The department has also not said publicly whether investigators believe the play set was altered before it was sold on Facebook Marketplace.

Her Parents Remembered Her Voice

While the police continue their investigation, Suzi and Jason have focused on the child who filled their home with music. In a tribute shared with Daily Mail, they described Briella as "pure joy in a tiny, stubborn, independent little package."

"She loved to sing, about everything and nothing, and if you spent even a few minutes with her, you knew it right away," her parents said.

Briella was also remembered as a naturally kind little girl who could brighten a room without working for anyone's attention. Her parents said that quality had been present from the beginning of her short life.

"She adored her big brother, Brock, with her whole heart," the family added. That relationship makes his role in the investigation especially painful. Suzi and Jason ended their tribute with a promise that their daughter's place in the family would never disappear.

"Briella, you were, and always will be, one of our life's little miracles."

The Family Received an Outpouring of Support

Thomas Holmes, Briella's uncle, organized a fundraiser to help the family with funeral, memorial, and other unexpected expenses. Its message said their hearts had been shattered by Briella's sudden loss.

"Briella was a bright light in the lives of so many. She had a kind heart, a beautiful spirit, and a smile that could light up any room. She touched countless lives with her love, laughter, and compassion, and the impact she made will never be forgotten."

The page also asked supporters who could not donate to share the appeal and keep the Holmes family in their thoughts and prayers.

As of this publication, over 600 donations had brought in over $76,000, surpassing the fundraiser's $70,000 goal. The page finished telling the world that Briella would remain "loved, forever missed, and forever in our hearts."

A Safety Warning for Other Caregivers

Kathy Wall, director of Safe Kids Palm Beach County, responded to Briella's death with a warning about active supervision. Her remarks focused on the need for caregivers to remain physically present and attentive around young children.

"Our kids are our greatest assets, they're our future, and we have to be present for them, day to day," she said. "We have to have active supervision in keeping them safe."

The circumstances show how quickly a familiar room can become dangerous for a toddler in a way the adults responsible for Briella may never have imagined.
