NY Police Officer, 31, Dies in Dominican Republic Days After Cosmetic Procedure as Family Waits for Answers

A decision rooted in faith led Rebecca DePaula to the Dominican Republic. What was meant to be a brief trip ended in heartbreak.

Rebecca DePaula left New York expecting a brief stay in Santo Domingo. Instead, the trip ended in tragedy, and her loved ones are still waiting to learn what happened.

The 31-year-old New York Police Department (NYPD) officer traveled roughly 1,550 miles from New York City to the Dominican Republic, expecting to return home within days. Instead, she died early Sunday, August 2, 2026, at a clinic in the National District, as reported by Noticias SIN.

Her remains are being held at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) and will be returned to the United States for burial after the required procedures are completed.

For relatives, colleagues, and friends, DePaula's death has been especially difficult because it came at a time when both her personal life and professional career appeared to be entering a new chapter.

A Life Dedicated to Service in More Than One Way

Alongside her work as a police officer, she spent the past four years serving as a Christian pastor with her husband, dedicating part of her life to preaching and serving her community.

Those who knew DePaula remembered her as someone whose faith was visible in everyday interactions.

Retired NYPD instructor David Marmol, who helped train DePaula after she joined the department, recalled that she greeted people differently than most recruits.

"Horrible news. You was such a beautiful soul. You would say God bless you instead of hi," Marmol wrote in an Instagram tribute. "You had so many good questions. You had such a bright future. You will be missed by your family, friends and colleagues."

An Officer Whose Career Was Still Beginning

DePaula joined the NYPD in January 2025, according to the New York Daily News (NYDN) and public employment records published by 50-a.org.

The records show she later served with the 46th Precinct Field Training Unit before being assigned to the 46th Precinct in June 2026, where she remained at the time of her death.

Although she had served with the department for only about 18 months, colleagues said she had already distinguished herself through her work.

Five months before her death, DePaula stood before fellow officers and community members during the 46th Precinct's March Community Council meeting to receive the precinct's Officer of the Month award.

According to an official 46th Precinct Facebook post, she was recognized for "outstanding police work and dedication to the community." A photograph shared by the precinct shows DePaula standing beside Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Moran as she accepted the recognition.

Only months later, the same law enforcement community was mourning her loss. "Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our sister P.O. Rebecca De Paula, who passed away while off duty after only 18 months on the job," Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry said in a statement provided to the NYDN.

"We ask all New Yorkers to keep her family, friends and coworkers in your prayers during this difficult time."

The New York Dominican Officers Organization (NYDO) also honored DePaula in a public statement shared on Instagram. "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of NYDO member Police Officer Rebecca DePaula," the organization wrote.

The organization asked supporters to keep DePaula's family, friends and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers, adding that "Her kindness, her service and memory will never be forgotten."

The Procedure That Brought Her to the Dominican Republic

DePaula traveled to Santo Domingo to undergo breast implant removal surgery. Relatives said she chose to have the implants removed because of a personal and spiritual conviction.

She wanted to continue her life without the implants as part of her Christian faith, they said, and never imagined the procedure would end in tragedy.

DePaula's relatives told the same publication that after the procedure, she developed a bacterial infection that doctors said caused severe diarrhea, further complicating her condition.

Her mother said she was initially informed that DePaula was in serious condition, but when she arrived at the clinic, she was told that her daughter had died.

DePaula's brother, Edwin López, said the news devastated the family. "We are in shock. It hurts a lot," he said, according to Univision.

As relatives make arrangements to return DePaula home to the United States, he said they continue trying to understand what happened. "We're still processing it, and many of us are wondering why this happened," López added.

DePaula's family has reportedly asked Dominican authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death and determine whether there was medical negligence or any irregularities during the medical care she received.

Breast Implant Removal Is an Elective Procedure

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast implant removal — also known as explant surgery — is performed to remove breast implants and any scar tissue that has formed around them.

The organization says the decision to undergo the procedure depends on several factors, including a patient's overall health, whether an implant is leaking or has ruptured, and personal preference.

The ASPS says surgeons should explain the procedure's potential risks before patients give informed consent. Those risks can include anesthesia-related complications, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, blood clots, persistent pain, poor wound healing, skin loss, scarring and the possibility of additional surgery, among other complications.

Her Death Comes Amid Broader Scrutiny of Cosmetic Procedures

DePaula's death comes as cosmetic procedures in the Dominican Republic continue to receive increased public attention following several recent patient deaths.

Noticias SIN reported that those cases have resulted in judicial investigations, the closure of health centers and renewed questions about oversight of clinics and the professionals performing cosmetic procedures.

One of the most recent involved Rebecca Brizard, who died on July 24 after cosmetic surgery at a facility in Santo Domingo Este.

Authorities later determined that the establishment had been operating without the required health permit and alleged that the procedure had been performed by a man identified as a barber who was not accredited to practice as a plastic surgeon. The facility was later closed while the investigation continued.

Authorities have not linked Brizard's case to DePaula's death. As investigators continue examining DePaula's case, her family remains focused on one outcome: learning what happened during the trip they expected would end with her return home, not her funeral.
