'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Star Terry Crews and Wife Rebecca Reveal Their Health Battle

In an emotional interview with People, Rebecca revealed she went public only after finally having "uplifting information to offer" following years of hardship.

At first, it didn't feel like anything serious, just subtle changes that were easy to brush off. But as the moments piled up, a quiet concern began to take hold, one that unfolded during a time when they were already working to repair their marriage.

It began with numb toes during bike rides, followed by a leg that started dragging and small memory lapses that grew unsettling.

"I thought it was just the stress because of everything we were going through," she said. Eventually, tremors confirmed her fears, which were tied to a family history of Parkinson's.

The breaking point came after days without sleep left her in despair. "I hadn't slept in three days... and I felt like I wanted to die," she admitted.

That was when Terry stepped in with hope, sharing news of an FDA-approved focused ultrasound treatment he had researched for years. Eight months later, Rebecca says the procedure significantly reduced her tremors.

Now, after a 16-year battle with Parkinson's disease, the couple is facing the illness openly.

Terry told the publication, "It's definitely been hard to watch her on those days when I see her so worn out by this. We're going through this together."

Their decision to speak out now sheds new light not only on their private struggle, but also on the family-first mindset that has long defined their life together.

As previously reported, Terry has built an accomplished career from the NFL to Hollywood, but he says his greatest honor is being a husband and father.

Over the span of three decades, his proudest role has been within the walls of his own home — a place filled with milestones, heartbreaks, and love that runs generations deep.

Marriage and Fatherhood

The "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star first met Rebecca King-Crews back in the late 1980s at Western Michigan University. He was just 18. She was already a mother to six-month-old Naomi, navigating college life with a baby in tow.

On July 29, 1989, they tied the knot, and by age 20, Terry was thrust into fatherhood. Over time, their family expanded — though not without devastating loss along the way.

The couple has bravely spoken about suffering three miscarriages, with Terry saying, "Me and my wife, we know what it's like to lose a child [sic]."

The experience was heartbreaking for the actor, who values fatherhood more than anything. As he once stated, "The movies and all the things I've done? They're not my legacy. It's really my son, and my daughters, and my family. That's the legacy."

That idea of family was tested in later years when Rebecca faced serious health challenges. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2015 after experiencing symptoms for several years. In 2019, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy in 2020. She is now cancer-free.

Terry spoke about standing by his wife through those moments, saying, "I knew she was a superhero. And she had already went [sic] through cancer and defeated it. 100% cancer free. And I said, this is yet another — this is why you get married."

He continued, "My thing is, when they say in sickness and health, this is the battle that we were designed together. That's the whole way I see it. Where she's weak, I'm strong. Where I'm weak, she's strong. And we built each other up like that for almost 37 years. And all the way to forever. That's how we're doing it."

That foundation of partnership carried into the way Terry approached raising his children, a journey that began with Naomi, the daughter who first taught him what fatherhood really demands.

1. Naomi Anna Burton-Crews

Just two years old when Terry stepped into her life, Naomi Anna Burton-Crews became his daughter when he married Rebecca in 1989. A young man at 20, Terry admits he was unprepared for the weight of fatherhood.

Trying to fill the role, he confessed to playing the part of the fun parent, but admits now that it came from the wrong place. "I had been a 'Fun Dad' out of a desire to control and manipulate my children into doing what I wanted, but it's impossible to love and control someone at the same time," he wrote in 2015.

Their relationship wasn't always easy. Naomi left home at 15, calling her father's behavior too controlling. But time and love shifted everything. In 2019, Terry proudly wrote, "I raised a daughter who is not biologically mine[…] My oldest. And I love her with all my heart."

She is now a mother herself. Terry and Rebecca became grandparents in 2010 with the birth of Naomi's daughter, an experience the couple embraced and celebrated publicly.

2. Azriél Patricia Crews

Born two years into her parents' marriage, Azriél Patricia Crews was Terry's first biological child. At the time, he believed another baby might bring the family closer, but the change didn't happen as he'd hoped.

He kept trying to win his daughters over with leniency, fun, and charm, but saw his efforts fall short. "Bad guy," Mom — as Terry put it — always won their affection.

When Tera Zella Crews arrived eight years after Azriél, Terry's parenting hadn't evolved much — still full of gifts, treats, and indulgences that clashed with Rebecca's consistent approach.

He would buy more than what was needed, even replacing simple birthday gifts with full collections and life-size versions. Still, he struggled to understand why his children responded more positively to Rebecca's structure than to his generosity.

Tera has long been a fixture in the family’s joyful snapshots. In August 2013, Terry shared a sweet tribute, "Happy 15th Birthday to the sweetest most beautiful daughter a father could ask for! I love you Tera Bera!!!!!"

4. Wynfrey 'Winnie' Crews

Wynfrey Crews was the fourth daughter born to Terry and Rebecca. With the new addition, the house became even louder, livelier, and more complicated.

But the biggest shift came with Naomi's sudden move-out — a moment that deeply unsettled Terry. Though he didn't change right away, the seed was planted.

Wynfrey has always stayed close to the family spotlight, joining public outings and social posts. But in late 2016, a terrifying turn on a London vacation shook the family.

The image showed Terry and Rebecca flanking her hospital bed, beaming with relief, while Tera and Isaiah leaned in close. Wrapped in a white hospital blanket, Winnie gave a thumbs-up, a reassuring signal that she was on the mend.

5. Isaiah Samuel Crews

Isaiah Crews, born June 27, 2005, came into the world two years after Naomi left home — and with him came Terry's hope for a fresh start. His only son. A blank page. But the patterns didn't break immediately.

Praise became overpraise. Gifts became bribes. Love was there, but structure wasn't. It was only with Isaiah that Terry finally committed to real change. He studied parenting, embraced discipline, and found peace in accountability over approval.

Isaiah has since stepped confidently into the spotlight, known for roles in "The Family Crews" (2010), "Side Hustle" (2020), and "The Great Nickmas Tree Sliming" (2022).

In March 2021, Terry fulfilled a lifelong dream: guest-starring on Isaiah's Nickelodeon show, "Side Hustle." The emotional weight of the moment was overwhelming.

"First, I just want to say.... I AM THE PROUDEST DAD IN THE WORLD," he captioned the post. "When the episode finished filming, I cried. Then I watched it — and cried some more."

He continued, "This is just the height of living — watching your kids live their dreams and then participating with them as they enjoy every minute. I love you, Isaiah — please know this now and forever."

Terry later shared another heartfelt tribute in April 2022, writing, "Great time with my superstar son[...] CAN YOU TELL I'M PROUD OF HIM?🔥🔥🔥."

Isaiah himself respects his dad, but he has carved out his own identity. "I love my dad so much. But I'm my own person as well. I can have my own accomplishments," he stated.

In 2022, Isaiah celebrated Terry's birthday on Instagram. The tribute read, "Happy birthday to the best father anyone could ask for. Love you, padre."

In interviews, Terry has praised his youngest child. "I am in awe of his talent," he told Parade in 2022. "He's a much better actor than I ever was. At 16, I wish I [were] as cool and calm, and focused as he is! I see nothing but greatness coming."
