Mom Tragically Loses 2 Little Kids a Week Apart – A Year Later She Gets ‘Gift’ From Heaven
A mother was driving home with her two children from a birthday party when a tragic incident claimed her kids' life. After losing her babies, the devastated mother thought she couldn't have another child again until fate surprised her with a "gift."
Rhiannon Lucas from Tredegar, Wales, United Kingdom, happily lived with her children, Jayden Lee Lucas, 3, and Gracie Ann, 4. Like most mothers, Rhiannon wanted the best for her children, unaware they weren't going to be around for long.
It was a regular day for the family on February 5, 2022, when they were driving back after enjoying a birthday party. The children were in the backseat while their 25-year-old mother drove the car.
Along the way, Rhiannon's daughter said she wanted to use the toilet. As a result, the mother carefully steered her car towards the hard shoulder in Newport.
However, things took an unexpected turn when Rhiannon pulled over. In a matter of seconds, her world turned upside down as a van crashed into her vehicle.
The family was rushed to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in critical condition, after Martin Newman hit their vehicle.
Rhiannon, who suffered severe injuries, was unprepared to hear what the doctors told her about her children. Her little girl died the following day, while Jayden closed his eyes forever a week later on February 11.
When the authorities investigated the cause of the crash, they learned that Newman was driving under the influence. He had consumed cocaine the night before the crash and had drunk so much that he couldn't go to work the next day.
Recalling how he hit Rhiannon's car, a distraught Newman said he didn't remember anything and guessed that he might have fallen asleep while driving.
Meanwhile, after losing her kids to the horrifying accident, Rhiannon's life turned into a nightmare. All she could think of was her irreplaceable loss, unaware she would receive a "gift" from heaven the following year.
What Happened after She Lost Her Children?
Rhiannon confessed her family had "been to hell" after Newman rammed his van into her vehicle. She went through the worst following the loss of her beloved babies.
Two months after the tragedy, the mother posted a birthday wish for Jayden, who would have turned four if he was alive. She shared a video of her children's graves covered with flower bouquets and colorful balloons and wrote:
"Mammy has been up this morning putting flowers and balloons. I hope you and your sister are looking after each other."
Rhiannon thought the pain of losing her babies was something no one could heal from until fate surprised her with something unexpected. While the car crash left the mother with liver and kidney injuries, making her think she couldn't conceive another baby, she soon discovered she was pregnant.
Rhiannon confessed she had already guessed the correct gender of her baby because of her cravings. They were similar to those she had experienced before giving birth to Ann.
Thus, on March 30, 2023, Rhiannon and her partner welcomed their baby girl, Summer-Gracie, into this world. The mother believes her late children sent the little girl to them as a "gift." She added:
"This little girl has given us hope and brought us back to life."
What Happened to Newman?
41-year-old Newman had been charged with killing the two kids and causing injury to their mother while driving drunk. The man appeared in court and was sentenced to nine years and four months in jail. Moreover, the authorities banned him from driving for 14 years and eight months.
Newman's sentence did not sit well with Rhiannon and her family, who felt it wasn't enough. As a result, they requested the Attorney General's office to review the sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme. It gives the law authorities 28 days to decide on the public's request and forward the case to the Court of Appeal.
However, the authorities did not approve the family's request, and Newman's sentence remained unchanged. The decision disappointed the family, with the children's grandfather, Jason Lucas, expressing:
"I don't believe in the law anymore."
The 52-year-old believed Newman's sentence should have been increased because he would eventually be released from prison and meet his children, but the Lucas family's "suffering will never end."
Meanwhile, the father of the kids, Joseph Wheaton, also expressed his feelings while recalling what happened in court. He remembered Newman standing in court saying he wanted to see his children.
Wheaton thought it was "disrespectful," considering he had to contend with visiting his children in a graveyard. He felt devastated because there was no way he could see his children alive again.
One shining light despite this horrifying ordeal was the birth of Summer-Gracie. Rhiannon confessed:
"When you lose everything, and then you get something to hold onto, there's really no way to be able to describe it."
The mother plans to take her little girl to the graveyard on Jayden's birthday this month. She went to meet her babies with Summer-Gracie earlier as well.
We hope the little girl brings immense joy to her mother, who went through the worst time of her life. Rest in peace, little babies!
