Susan Sarandon Gets Arrested — She's Hailed a 'Hero' despite Being Taken Away in Handcuffs
- Susan Sarandon was arrested and was filmed as the police led her away in handcuffs.
- Sarandon had a successful career in Hollywood. She also opened up about her desire to have a travel companion.
- After her busy career, the 76-year-old actress became a fighter for justice and a caring grandmother.
Susan Sarandon is an actress and political activist who has pledged support to various political causes over the years.
On May 8, 2023, Sarandon was arrested in New York State Capitol in Albany. She was protesting in support of fair wages for restaurant workers. The "Snitch" star was arrested alongside eight other people, including New York lieutenant governor candidate Ana Maria Archila.
Sarandon and those arrested were booked, given appearances tickets, and released. The actress was detained while advocating against legislation that would raise the minimum wage of tipped restaurant workers.
The pending legislation will allow New York leaders to increase the state's minimum wage to $17 per hour. Sarandon was protesting because, according to One Fair Wage, tipped workers are excluded from the legislation.
The legislation may be harmful to workers, as when a similar wage increase happened in 2016, several employees suffered a 25% decline in their income.
On the day of the arrest, Sarandon was caught on camera in handcuffs, being escorted away by a police officer. Human rights advocate Steven Donziger shared the actress's picture on Instagram.
Donziger condemned the arrest, saying "I find it repugnant that we must battle for a living wage in the wealthiest nation on earth." Several people commented on Donziger's post of Sarandon, calling her a "hero." One user commented on Sarandon's courage:
"Always speaking up on behalf of the Wellbeing and Welfare for others, a true spokeswoman for Humanity. ~May we all be Free to Work for what we Need to Feed Our Families."
Social media users also praised the Oscar-winning actress for her outstanding movies and the good work she does as a human rights activist:
"She could probably book herself into jail at this point, she's had enough experience... a good lady who fights the good fight and makes fabulous movies. Rocky Horror. Thelma & Louise. Bull Durham. Atlantic City."
Sarandon's activism is not a one-time thing, as she was spotted in 2018 protesting against immigration policies, and recently, she marched in support of writers in New York during the writer's strike.
Sarandon Is Hopeful to find a Travel Companion
Sarandon made her big-screen debut in 1970 in the drama-thriller movie "Joe" and has since become a popular name in Hollywood. Describing her life, said:
"My life has been filled with happy accidents. The thing that's served me well is being able to change to a different track. I had never taken acting lessons, but just sort of fell into it."
At 20, Sarandon married her fellow actor Chris Sarandon in Washington D.C., and the couple moved to New York City, where she landed roles such as Janet Weiss in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," a 1975 horror-mystery film. The actress would later divorce Chris, explaining, "He wasn't a mean person. It was just about choosing myself."
She noted that her grandkids watched for a little while, then took an hour break but then came back when they heard the chaos at the end of the movie.
The "Stepmom" actress is a mother of three. She had her first child, actress Eva Amurri, 38, with Italian director Franco Amurri. She had two more children with actor Tim Robins. Jack Henry Robbins, 33, is a director and Miles Robbins, 31, is a musician and actor.
Sarandon's daughter, Amurri, praised her parenting, noting that her mother was great at balancing work and motherhood while giving back to society. "She made our Halloween costumes and was at our basketball and soccer games," Amurri revealed.
When her children were all grown up and had left home, Sarandon focused on her career. She went on to star in the 2019 comedy-crime film, "The Jesus Rolls." As she got older, the actress said she was fully embracing her new age, adding:
"What you look like becomes less and less an issue, and what you are is the point."
As for her personal life, Sarandon swore never to get married again. However, she is open to a new romance. She added that the window to find love again may have closed, but she was "forever hopeful" but "not desperate":
"I would like to have a travel companion, male, female — age doesn't matter, but I would like to find someone who's up for an adventure kind of attitude. And also, who cares about something passionately and who loves what they do, whatever that is."
While she hopes for romance in her life, Sarandon admits she is pretty happy making memories with her children.
Sarandon Loves Everything about Being a Grandmother
Sarandon is a grandmother to her daughter's three children. Marlowe Martino, Major Martino, and Mateo Martino. The actress loves her grandkids and talks about them whenever an opportunity presents itself. She revealed a little about her grandkids, saying:
"Marlowe is just so funny, she's a fierce little clown and so articulate. And Major's really showing his personality. They're divine. I love them."
Before her third grandchild was born, an excited Sarandon told the media that she was going to have another grandchild. "Those kids are great, and I'm going to have another one in March, so that's really exciting!" she announced.
Sarandon said she loves "everything" about being a grandmother, including hanging out with her grandkids and figuring out their personalities. Describing Marlowe and Major, she mused:
"Marlowe thinks everything is funny, and she's absolutely fearless. Major is into doing people's hair and cleaning at the moment, so I don't know how long that will last."
On her Instagram story, Sarandon once shared how she watched the film "Enchanted" with her grandkids. They watched for a little while at first, then took an hour's break, but then came back when they heard the chaos at the end of the movie.
Sarandon added that her grandkids "ran back in time just to watch their grandma turn into a terrifying dragon … and then die. And then I answered 293364758382 questions about it."
Sarandon is single and looking forward to having a special someone, but at the moment, she is having lots of fun with her grandkids while advocating for issues she is passionate about.
