- She revealed previously unheard details about her early memories and other facts.
- Sadly, the singer repeated her mother's painful fate.
Weeks before Tina Turner's death on May 24, 2023, she gave an interview which turned out to be her last one. The singer, born in Tennessee, was 83 when she passed away after a six-decade-long career.
As a teenager, she found fame with the Kings of Rhythm band, which belonged to her future husband, Ike Turner. She and Ike later became a duo performance and released hits like "Nutbush City Limits" and "Proud Mary."
Her last interview with The Guardian was published on April 8, 2023. Tina revealed some things in the interview that she'd never mentioned to the public and confessed her earliest childhood memory.
The legendary star revealed what kind of child she was before becoming the celebrity we knew and loved. She even addressed whether she'd ever said the words "I love you" without meaning them.
The musician, who earned the title of Queen of Rock 'n Roll because of her enthralling stage presence filled with energy and soulful hit songs, also shared how she wished people to remember her. In her personal life, Tina mimicked her mother in the worst way.
From a Tomboy to the Queen of Rock ’n Roll Who Repeated Her Mother's Sad Fate
Tina was born on November 26, 1939, as Anna Mae Bullock, and she grew up in Nutbush, Tennessee, to a difficult childhood. Her parents were Floyd Richard and Zelma Priscilla Bullock, and an abusive father muddied her childhood, but later she got into an unhappy marriage of her own.

During her Guardian interview, Tina shared that her earliest memory was of her playing on her favorite tree. The late Grammy Award winner recalled being a "tomboy" and how she kept messing her hair and tearing her clothes.
The way she was as a child was in clear contrast to the ultra-feminine and classy woman she became. Fans grew to know her as a fiery woman who rocked short dresses and high heels for her performances.

Floyd and Zelma were sharecroppers, but they struggled to make ends meet. By the time the singer was 11, she and her sister, Alline, had to be raised by their grandmother in Nutbush after their parents separated.

Not long after the divorce, Floyd remarried while his ex-wife relocated to St. Louis, having left their relationship that was filled with domestic violence. Tina was 16 when her grandmother died, and she moved to the city where her mother lived.

There Tina got into music and met Ike. After witnessing her mother live under abuse and escape it, the star repeated Zelma's fate by marrying Ike, who also became abusive to her, and it took her 16 years to leave him through a divorce.
Never-Heard-before Insights into Tina's Past
Tina revealed that she never entertained or returned to the past when asked about her greatest fear. She explained that she'd fought through so much that she had to choose to keep going forward.

Her response to what she hated the most about herself was "nothing" because she regarded herself as a perfectionist. However, what she deplored in others was how many people tried to make decisions for her.
The artist felt it was a "big mistake" for people to make assumptions like that. The star described herself as an honest person who was fun, and as most people who knew her would confirm, she was also feisty!
If Tina had a superpower, it would be how she was able to perform many solo concerts wearing six-inch heels! When asked what made her unhappy, she became somber as she explained that it was losing people close to her too soon.
The celebrity was quite confident in herself and said she didn't dislike anything about her appearance. She felt women were trained to analyze themselves too closely, making them critical of themselves, an issue most men didn't face.
Tina was content with Angela Bassett having played her in a film about her life, and she was happy to have her team of "my Tinas" who played her in their musical. What was unappealing about the star was that she gladly watched horror movies nonstop!
However, she had no qualms or fears about aging because she felt life was an adventure and embraced all it brought daily. When asked who her celebrity crush was, the singer quickly named Mick Jagger and how much she'd loved it when she toured with the Rolling Stones.
Tina was happy to be famous because it was something she wanted, but she loved how she had anonymity in her retirement. When asked what love felt like, the musician might've been referring to her last and second husband, Erwin Bach, - who gave her stability - when she said:
"[It felt] like a dryer going off in your stomach."

Tina once openly confessed to being abused and realized she needed to change that. When the singer divorced Ike, she didn't get a house or money and only had her name, which she used to rise to fame.
The last question she [Tina Turner] was asked was to share a secret.
In 2017, when Bach donated his kidney to save his wife, she wondered about people thinking it was a transactional donation. Some people still believed her husband married Tina for fame and cash, but he ignored the rumors.
With Ike, the artist described their marriage as "hellish," and that it almost destroyed her, and when she became sick, she knew her life wasn't over yet. Despite everything she and Bach went through, the two were closer than ever, and she now understood why her karma was the way it was.
The star believed in balance and was happier than ever before her death. The celebrity was also questioned whether she'd ever said the words "I love you" and not meant it, and the only time she did was when she was afraid for her life or her children's.
If the star chose to be someone else, she said she'd prefer to be Oprah Winfrey! The last time she changed her mind about something important was when she first met her producers, with Tina telling them she didn't want a musical made but then changed her mind and now felt she'd made the right choice.
When told to choose between more fame, sex, or money, the singer hilariously asked if she had any other choice that suited her age! The musician touchingly revealed that she wished to be remembered as the Queen of Rock ’n Roll before adding:
"As a woman who showed other women that it is OK to strive for success on their own terms."

The last question she was asked was to share a secret, and Tina revealed she loved McDonald's! The artist said after the first preview of her musical in London, she forced Bach to detour to the franchise on their way back to their hotel!
The “What's Love Got to Do With It” singer, who had to pick cotton to earn a living after being abandoned by her parents, released her documentary "Tina" in 2021, where Bassett starred. The documentary became Tina's last goodbye to her fans before her unexpected death.
