Mom Gives Birth to Twins in Toilet Hours before One of Them Was to Be Terminated to Save the Other’s Life
A woman from the United Kingdom had given up on the idea that she'd get pregnant one day but was surprised when she conceived and discovered she was expecting twins. One of the boys had a low chance of survival and was meant to be terminated, but a miracle happened hours before.
Corinne Rose, 30, had lived her life knowing she would never carry her children due to health issues she had suffered in the past. Doctors had ruled out her becoming naturally pregnant, so she was shocked when she received conflicting news.
In July 2022, Corinne and her partner, Will Cattanach, 32, discovered they had conceived non-identical twins. Being non-identical meant the babies grew in separate amniotic sacs in their mother's womb.
The Southampton, Hampshire, resident revealed how "terrified" she was to conceive after having made peace with it never happening. However, what scared her the most was that she was carrying two children, but she became extremely excited after she got over that.
Corinne didn't expect that she would have to make a tough decision about her babies' lives. She had to choose between losing both of them or just one.
How and Why Was Corinne Forced to Choose between Her Twins?
All was going well with Corinne's pregnancy until she reached 14 weeks. The restaurant manager called her midwife when she felt she had "peed" on herself while on a shopping trip.
The midwife became worried and urged the twins' mother to go to A&E at Southampton's Princess Anne Hospital. A scan there revealed her water had broken—one of her children's amniotic sacs had burst too soon.
The fetus, named Neo, was losing vital fluids that would ensure his healthy fetal development. As if that wasn't enough, the fetus was also diagnosed with bent limbs, impaired lung function, and his liver grew in the chest cavity.
Doctors gave Corinne the heartbreaking news that Neo was unlikely to survive, thus, it would be best to terminate the pregnancy in the womb to give his twin a fighting chance. In a June 2023 video, the hopeful mother confessed:
"I had to think about what his life was going to be like."
Corinne and her music producer partner, who was still living in Essex at the time and had gone back home, weighed the options and settled with going ahead with the termination. The pair felt it was the best route for the other twin, Grayson, who couldn't develop well and wasn't getting enough nutrients because of Neo.
Corinne confessed that the decision was horrible, but she had to make peace with only having one baby instead of none. The expecting mother was 32 weeks when she was booked for a medical termination at 2 p.m. on January 19, 2023.
However, what she didn't anticipate was that her unborn babies would be deciding their fates. Corinne never made it to her medical termination appointment because Grayson and Neo gave her a huge surprise that morning!
How Were Corinne's Twins Welcomed into the World, and How Are They Doing Now?
At 2:30 a.m., on the day Corinne was supposed to undergo the procedure, she woke up at home thinking she was having "terrible" stomach cramps. The pregnant woman rushed to the bathroom, where she started feeling the urge to push before realizing she was in labor!
Neo [Cattanach] had to stay longer at the hospital and was only discharged three months later...
Even though she wasn't due for a few weeks, her water broke, and she felt a head while sitting on the toilet! She assumed it was irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) when she started having continuous cramps the day before, but on the day of the termination, to her surprise, she said:
“Grayson was born first, and he came head first into the toilet."
Grayson was born at 3.45 a.m., weighing 4lbs 6oz. Corinne scooped him out, and at 3.50 a.m., Neo followed his older brother, who weighed 2lbs 14oz. The experience was crazy, leaving Corinne with a baby in each hand. She recalled:
"Both babies went down the toilet head first..."
A neighbor called Will to inform him that he'd become a father, while Corinne and her sons were rushed by ambulance to the hospital. While in the ambulance, Neo was placed in a blanket and on his mother's chest, with Corinne thinking he'd drift off to sleep and pass away peacefully.
However, he kept squeaking, moving around, and trying to open his tiny eyes. His mother was still dazed and shocked by the whole emotional experience she had just gone through.
Doctors at the hospital didn't think Neo would make it, but the baby kept fighting in the labor ward with his mother, and they quickly took him to the neonatal ward with his brother. Grayson had a blood transfusion and remained in the hospital for three weeks when he was big enough to be sent home.
Meanwhile, Neo had to stay longer and was only discharged three months later, in mid- May. The following month, Corinne revealed Neo was making ''amazing progress," calling his recovery "miraculous," seeing how the organs that were in the wroing places when he was born had self-corrected, with his liver flipping back to its right place.
Now that he had finally joined his brother at home, the twins would be cared for full-time by their father, who decided to leave his job to attend to them. Corinne revealed that Neo had been working hard on his weak, underdeveloped lungs, and he still required high-flow oxygen and a breathing machine to function well.
She also noted how when her son got older, he would need corrective casts on his legs, but besides his slow lung development, he was a happy child. The first-time mother also shared how Grayson was a chunky boy and doing very well!
Corinne couldn't believe both her children had survived and were home with her. On June 11, 2023, she shared an article on Facebook featuring her incredible story, proudly revealing, "our lil miracle baby got printed."
