A mother catfished and harassed her daughter for a year before she was finally caught. She showed remorse while being tried for her actions, and her lawyer tried to plead mental health issues in her case.

In December 2022, a weird and disturbing case was reported when Kendra Gail Licari, 42, was charged with a strange crime. The Mt. Pleasant woman was charged with harassing two teenagers and attempting to frame another student.

Licari also faced two counts of using a computer to commit a crime and the same amount for stalking a minor. She is also charged with one count of obstruction of justice. And the worst of it? One of the teenagers she harassed was her daughter.

The Mt. Pleasant resident's obstruction charge was made because she allegedly tried framing another minor for her crimes. The parent's arrest came after authorities received a report from Beal City Schools.

How the harassment started and lasted for a year is a shocking story that will have you on the edge of your seat.

How Kendra Harassed Her Own Child

The harassment complaint was initially made in December 2021, after Licari's daughter went to her for "help," saying she was being bullied. According to Beal City's superintendent William Chilman, the woman was hired at the school as a girls' basketball coach at the time before being let go at the end of the season.

Then Licari was informed that the team's coach would be changed. David Barberi, Isabella County Prosecutor, said the former basketball coach and the mother of her daughter's then-boyfriend worked with school officials to determine who was harassing the students.

Licari and the other parent initially told the school about the harassment before the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and local police were roped into the matter. Speaking to WKRC, a local radio station, Barberi said:

"When the case first came into our office, it was bizarre and almost hard to believe."

His office received hundreds of harassment text messages that covered over 1,000 pages. Most were mean, demeaning, and demoralizing, but one mistake that Licari made led the officials to pick up that it was her doing the bullying.

What Did Kendra Do That Made Her a Suspect, and How Did She React in Court?

In mid-April 2022, local computer crime resources were used up, forcing the police to contact the FBI for use of its computer crime division. Chilman was informed that Licari was a suspect by the end of April or early May.

Barberi revealed that the FBI managed to link the computer IP addresses that sent disturbing messages to Licari. When questioned, the parent gave a full confession, but it wasn't clear why she did it.

During her arraignment in 2022, she was released on a $5,000 bond. The woman was facing jail time of about ten years for the felony of committing a crime using a computer and additional five-year felonies, each for obstruction of justice and stalking a minor.

Her hearing was scheduled for December 29, 2022, when it would be decided if there was enough evidence to go to trial. Barberi said the suspect pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor in March 2023, leading him to drop the obstruction charge and the two counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

However, he still felt her actions were "abhorrent"...

In April 2023, Licari cried while telling Judge Mark Duthie how sorry she was for the hurt, pain, and confusion her actions had caused the victims. She also apologized to the teenager she'd tried to shift the blame on, her daughter, and her husband.

David Kramer, one of her defense lawyers, told the judge that Licari willingly started counseling on August 22, 2022, and also took parenting classes. The suspect admitted she was ashamed, embarrassed, and remorseful for what she did and would take it back if possible.

Kramer pushed for a psychiatric examination to determine if his client suffered from mental illness. He also asked the judge to delay Licari's sentence so she could continue counseling. Judge Duthie said he empathized with the parent for seeking counseling for her mental health issues.

However, he still felt her actions were "abhorrent," and speaking at his Mt. Pleasant courtroom while giving his judgment, Duthie described the case as "truly horrible." He felt it was the kind that made him glad that he was retiring at the end of his term, adding:

"I can't imagine any parent saying such horrible things to her own daughter."

The judge also noted how being anonymous on the internet allows people to do things they would not do if they were known. Licari was taken into custody after the sentencing for the bullying.
